  • The artistic precariat

    A Bain, Alison L Bain et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2012•Cited by: 25•References: 14

This article examines how some artists have collectively negotiated precarity in Toronto’s cultural sector during the last 2 decades through two arts experiments: the Waterfront Trail Artists’ Association and Don Blanche. The social scientific scholarly literature on arts funding, precarious employment and community economies provides an entry point for our critique of the creative class theory for its neglect of grassroots struggles to produce a…

  • The Tolstoy Marriage Revisited—Many Times

    Hugh Mclean•ARTICLE•Canadian Slavonic Papers•2011•Cited by: 1

IThe of Lev Nikolaevich (hereafter LN) and Sofia Andreevna (hereafter SA) Tolstoy has long served as a cynosure, an alluring subject, not so much for literary scholars as for professional writers with an eye for engaging reallife material, as emotion-rich as any novel. One need not even know Russian, Russia or Russian literature. The main primary sources, his diaries and her diaries, their correspondence, most of the memoirs of their children, ot…

  • Hernando De Soto's Route from Chicaça through Northeast Arkansas: A Suggestion

    H Terry Childs, William F Banaghan et al.•ARTICLE•Southeastern Archaeology•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 1

As a result of excavations in the protohistoric component at Chickasawba (3MS5) in Mississippi County, Arkansas, the authors were led to examine current interpretations of De Soto's route through northeast Arkansas. Certain difficulties appear to exist. This article provides a suggested alternative that does much to resolve these problems. Chickasawba is a multimound center located on Pemiscot Bayou, in Mississippi County, Arkansas (Figure 1). At…

  • The countryside

    Open Access•Hugh Mclean•CHAPTER•1998

Certainly since the time of Theocritus, and doubtless long before that, weary city dwellers have sought - or at least thought about seeking - escape from their noisy, bustling, confining urban world into the tranquillity, spaciousness, and presumed leisure of the countryside. In such moods nature generally appears to them in her most benign aspects: warm but not hot, green, fertile, vivifying, motherly. The country resident, on the other hand, ma…

  • The Cambridge Companion to the Classic Russian Novel

Open Access•Robert A Maguire, Hugh Mclean et al.•BOOK•The Cambridge companion to the…•1998

Many Russian novels of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have made a huge impact, not only inside the boundaries of their own country but across the western world. The Cambridge Companion to the Classic Russian Novel offers a thematic account of these novels, in fourteen newly-commissioned essays by prominent European and North American scholars. There are chapters on the city, the countryside, politics, satire, religion, psychology, philoso…

    Nicholas O Warner, Hugh Mclean•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•1990•Cited by: 1

All post-Tolstoy writers, whether Russian or foreign, have had to contend with his image. He and his books stand inescapably there: massive, majestic, seemingly impregnable. Two incompatible Tolstoy's confront each succeeding generation that attempts to understand his oeuvre: on one hand the husband, father, aristocratic landowner and world-famous novelist; on the other the 'humble' prophet of Christian anarchism, anti-cultural 'simplification', …
