Crime, Organized
Although the study of organized crime is primarily a sociological pursuit, the phenomenon is a subject of study in numerous other disciplines, including anthropology, economics, history, and political science. Despite, if not because of, this broad and varied inquiry into the topic, there is little consensus on what constitutes organized crime
The Dark Double: Russian Orthodoxy in Andrei Zviagintsev's Leviathan
This essay suggests that there are three crucial contexts that have been overlooked in the scholarship on Andrei Zviagintsev's film, Leviathan. First, there is the ecclesiastical history of the Russian Orthodox Church in the years following the election of Kirill (Gundiaev) as Patriarch of Moscow in 2009. The article demonstrates that Zviagintsev was keenly aware of Kirill's growing partnership with the Putin regime and that he was especially dis…
Putin's Holy War of the Fatherland: Sacred Memory and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine
In mid-2020, Patriarch Kirill (Gundiaev) consecrated a new church known as the Main Cathedral of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The cathedral was dedicated to the Soviet Union's "Great Victory" over Nazi Germany, and its interior was covered with grandiose mosaics depicting Soviet glory on the battlefields of World War II. In this version of the past, however, Soviet soldiers were shown to have supernatural help from Jesus Christ and…
Revolution, Raskol , and Rock ‘n’ Roll: The 1,020th Anniversary of the Day of the Baptism of Rus
Every year on July 28, citizens in contemporary Russia turn on the television news and hear extensive reports about a new federal holiday known as “The Day of the Baptism of Rus.” Viewers watch as Vladimir Putin and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow stand side‐by‐side and repeat an ancient story about the Conversion in 988 and the sacred bonds which even today unite the nations of “Holy Rus”: Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Mamãe eu quero: Carmen Miranda's Maternal Abundance

"Emerging" organized crime hypotheses in criminology textbooks: The case of African-American organized crime
Contemporary textbooks exhibit competing historical perspectives regarding so-called "emerging" organized crime groups. Some texts argue that organized crime committed by groups other than Sicilian/Italian-Americans is now emerging. Others hold that many of the "emerging" groups have been organizing crime for some time and that it is the research in this area that is emerging. This paper briefly examines these propositions, presenting the two gro…
