A chronology of alluvial fan response to Late Quaternary sea level and climate change, Crete
To better understand how fluvial systems respond to late Quaternary climatic forcing OSL and U-series dating was applied to stratigraphically significant sedimentary units within a small ( 2 ) alluvial fan system (the Sphakia fan) in southwest Crete. The resultant chronology (comprising 32 OSL and U-series ages) makes Sphakia fan one of the best dated systems in the Mediterranean and suggests that Cretan fans responded to climate in two ways. Fir…
Hooked on an Affect: Detroit Techno and Dystopian Digital Culture
Detroit techno is typically historicized as having grown out of the late 1970s and early 1980s middle-class, consumerist, and aspirational high school social party scene, giving the impression that Detroit techno artists created forward-thinking music as a means to acquire subcultural capital and (re)produce their identities. In this essay, this position is nuanced for a more complex understanding of techno's relation to the quotidian phenomenolo…
The Jouissance of the Flâneur: Rewriting Baudelaire and Modernity
One challenge for the humanities is to articulate subjectivities able to reach across national and regional divides without reestablishing the “cosmopolitan” or “ironic” sensibilities at the core of our ideological predicament. This article is such an attempt in a re-reading of Baudelaire, the writer who gave us “modernity” at the same moment he offered us a discourse on the “flâneur.” In such re-reading we answer his call to countersign his text…
Prehistoric and Historic Landscape Change in Aragón, Spain: Some Results from the Moncayo Archaeological Survey
The Moncayo Archaeological Survey (MAS) was initiated in 2000 to investigate population, economic and environmental change in a study area northwest of Zaragoza in the northeast of Spain. This is an interdisciplinary project which combines landscape archaeology with earth-science methodologies and approaches. Research undertaken during the first four field seasons has concentrated on reconstructing and explaining landscape change, while at the sa…
Cultural Psychoanalysis, or Theory, Resurrected
Cultural Psychoanalysis, or Theory, Resurrected Richard Pope (bio) Introduction: Cultural Psychoanalysis There is a question that is today everywhere asked, if only implicitly and rarely directly addressed: what is ‘cultural psychoanalysis’? It is an impossible question, to be sure, involving a Real continually circled around; but it is, perhaps, a productively — or even seductively — impossible question. Are we merely circling around the old pro…

Human and climatic impact on late Quaternary deposition in the Sparta Basin Piedmont: Evidence from alluvial fan systems
The evolution of four alluvial fans in the Evrotas Valley, southern Greece, was examined using a combination of geomorphological and sedimentological techniques. Source material for the fans is derived largely from the Taygetos Mountains, and thus the fan deposits provide proxy evidence for erosion of upland landscapes. Stratigraphic sequences exposed in the fanhead trenches suggest a progressive change in depositional style down‐fan. Within the …

Ambiguity and Meaning in The Master and Margarita: The Role of Afranius
Perhaps the most mysterious and elusive figure in Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita is Afranius, a man who has been in Judea for fifteen years working in the Roman imperial service as chief of the procurator of Judea's secret police. He is present in all four Judean chapters of the novel (chapters 2, 16, 25, 26) as one of the myriad connecting links, though we really do not know who he is for certain until near the end of the third of these cha…
