Who stays lonely and who does not? Identifying distinct loneliness trajectories after social loss events
Persistent feelings of loneliness can have serious consequences for psychological and physical health. Yet, to date, it remains unclear who is most vulnerable to entering the self-reinforcing loop of loneliness through which loneliness can become persistent. This preregistered study aimed to predict who becomes and stays lonely after social loss events by investigating data from the Longitudinal Internet Studies for the Social Sciences (LISS). We…
Dynamic networks of social contact, social desire, and affect across time scales
Social relationships are central to well-being because they fulfill social affiliation needs. To explain how social needs are regulated, theories describe daily-life processes among social desire, social contact, and affect. Still, these processes remain empirically underexplored because of their complexity. In this study, we estimated multivariate associations of social desire and affect with social contact across different modalities (in-person…
Network dynamics in subjective well-being and their differences across age groups
Although the structure of subjective well-being (SWB) has been examined in various studies, no consensus on its structure has yet been reached. This may be due to a neglect of the construct's dynamic aspects and domain satisfaction as a core aspect of SWB. This article aimed to overcome existing research gaps by applying network modeling to longitudinal data of 32,700 adults (24-64 years old) from the German Socioeconomic Panel to analyze within-…

Comrades of Color
In keeping with the tenets of socialist internationalism, the political culture of the German Democratic Republic strongly emphasized solidarity with the non-white world: children sent telegrams to Angela Davis in prison, workers made contributions from their wages to relief efforts in Vietnam and Angola, and the deaths of Patrice Lumumba, Ho Chi Minh, and Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired public memorials. Despite their prominence, however, schol…
Red on White’
The articles argues that in 1971–1973 North Korea’s leader Kim Il Sung used the Sino-American rapprochement and the Soviet-American détente to pursue Korean reunification on his terms; his aim was to ‘democratize’ and then ‘revolutionize’ South Korea and so achieve through dialogue what he failed to achieve through militancy. Kim’s game was based on a misreading of the political dynamics in South Korea and on misplaced confidence in North Korea’s…

Petri Hakkarainen. A State of Peace in Europe
The process set in motion by the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) and its Helsinki Final Act of 1975 is almost universally hailed as a catalyst for gradual change culminating in the end of the Cold War in Europe. Even contemporary critics and skeptics like Helmut Kohl and Henry Kissinger now regret their past verdicts and consider the CSCE process to have been extremely important. Petri Hakkarainen deserves commendation for…
