Digital surveys and reconstructions of the Franciscan friary at Visegrád, Hungary: Examples of the history of computer-aided reconstructions of medieval buildings in Hungary
The first computer-aided reconstructions of a Hungarian medieval building complex were created thirty years ago. The digital recreation of the cloister vault and the cloister walk of the Franciscan friary were part of the first Hungarian project aimed at creating a theoretical and visual reconstruction based on the preserved carved stones of a medieval building using computer-aided methods. This anniversary offers now an opportunity to summarise …
Nomadic Towns and Their Environments in Mongolia: The Khi-Land Project’s research into Khar Bukh Balgas and other Khitan settlements
The recent study of 10th–12th-century archaeological sites of the Khitan Liao Empire in Mongolia produced significant new results. Earlier research focused mainly on the internal structure of a few fortified settlements, while recent investigations placed greater emphasis on the immediate environment of these central places. In 2023, the Hungarian-Mongolian joint project called Khi-Land facilitated fieldwork at one of the most important archaeolo…
Digitális rekonstrukciók és felmérések a visegrádi ferences kolostorban. Példák a hazai középkori épületek számítógépes feldolgozásának történetéhez
Archaeology of the Modern era and contemporary archaeology in Hungary
According to the current legislation in Hungary, finds and relics buried before CE 1711, representing material remains of historical periods dating before that, are considered archaeological heritage. In other words, the Middle Ages and a large part of the Early Modern Period are still classified as being of archaeological interest in the legislative environment in Hungary, whereas the end of the Early Modern Period and the Late Modern Period are…

Archaeological site – sacred space: Popular religious beliefs and archaeological heritage in present-day Mongolia
Archaeological sites are usually discussed as places of academic research, however, there is an ever growing demand for museums and archaeological parks that present reconstructed buildings and archaeological features in a form that makes them accessible for the wider public. Sometimes these monuments have strong connections to cultural tourism and education, and have the potential to be turned into an experience-based exhibition; in other cases …

Research Using Metal Detectors at the Battlefield of Muhi: Community Archaeology, Battlefield Investigation and Related Methodological Issues
The defeat of the Hungarian forces at the battle of Muhi was a key historical episode, since it opened the country to the Mongol invasion. This event had complex consequences that have not yet been fully clarified regarding the further development of Hungarian society and its economy. The identification of the site of the battlefield has contributed to the better understanding of the events of 11 April 1241. The known course of events has been es…
Environmental Impacts of Medieval Uses of Natural Resources in the Carpathian Basin
Various natural resources were abundant in medieval Hungary, and contemporary sources offer a portrait of the kingdom as rich because of these natural conditions. The different forms in which these resources were put to use were decisive for the history of the Carpathian Basin, including its environmental history. In the Middle Ages, there were two key economic activities which played an especially significant role both in the sphere of local pro…

High precision laser scanning assisting in the service of historical and art historical research. The burial monument of Queen Gertrude (13th century)
One of the most important and controversial burial sites of medieval Hungary is the grave of Queen Gertrude of Meran with its decorated burial monument at the Cistercian Abbey of Pilis. Nicholaus clericus: A Hungarian student at Oxford University in the twelfth century
In the twelfth century a Hungarian cleric studied at Oxford, but it is unclear when, how and why he came to England. It is very unlikely that Nicholaus got his scholarship because of his services in the release of Richard I, as suggested by a former generation of scholars. The contacts between Hungary and some western European countries were strengthened under the rule of Béla III. In this process his marriage with Margaret of France (1186) was a…
