Plague in time of war: The example of the seventeenth-century Hungarian-Ottoman frontier
Absence and Presence: The Black Death and Subsequent Plague Waves in Fourteenth–Fifteenth-Century East Central Europe – A Short Introduction
The Black Death in the Kingdom of Hungary: Sources, Limitations, Interpretations
Western scholarship has studied the mid-fourteenth-century cataclysm of the Black Death for centuries. In contrast, due to the limited number of contemporary narrative sources, in East Central Europe, until recently historians discussed it only marginally. In the past decades, not independent of the emergence of new methods, such as archaeogenetics and palynology, and novel approaches to studying the Black Death such as climate and environmental …
Pre-Modern Towns at the Times of Catastrophes: East Central Europe in a Comparative Perspective. Edited by Michaela Antonín Malaníková, Beata Możejko, and Martin Nodl
Impact of pre-modern war on forests: The case of the Hungarian-Ottoman Military Frontier (ca. 1521–1690)
The paper aims at demonstrating the impact of premodern wars on forest resources. The example studied is Transdanubia (Dunántúl) in present-day Western Hungary which in the early modern times was a site of a lasting military struggle between the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary ruled by the Habsburgs for the time being. It is argued that in the military defense of the region, the Hungarian party heavily relied on the usage of natural obs…
Small urban waters and environmental pressure before industrialization: The case of Hungary
Before the birth of modern infrastructures, towns in Europe kept experiencing difficulties in providing water and a healthy environment for their inhabitants. Freshwater was not only essential for basic hygiene and drinking but water resources, especially urban streams played a key role in local economies. The article addresses the pressure the increasingly diverse utilization of water put on such streams by comparing six urban centers – Sopron, …
For the Benefit of Generations to Come or for the Sake of Survival
The paper discusses the changes in the forest legislation on different levels of early modern administration in Hungary. By using a wide variety of sources—laws, decrees, instructive documents, and letters—it explains how forests were regarded and handled in the period of the Ottomans’ presence in the Carpathian Basin. In analyzing the sources, the paper shows how the importance of protecting and taking care of forests at different levels of admi…
Conservation’s Roots: Managing for Sustainability in Preindustrial Europe, 1100–1800. Edited by Abigail P. Dowling and Richard Keyser

To the Last Tree Standing? Ottoman-Hungarian Wars and Forests in Transdanubia
Historical and archaeological research into Ottoman-period fortifications started in Hungary almost a century ago. In general, these fortifications, built mainly of wood and earth, received considerably less scholarly attention than the ones built of stone. The study of these wooden buildings received impetus in the past few years as new research techniques appeared, such as dendrochronology and dendroclimatology, and new research perspectives, s…

Diets and Synods in Buda and Its Environs
Medieval Buda in Context
This paper describes the Royal Forest of Pilis in the Middle Ages. It concludes that the western European institution of Royal Forests had its parallel in Hungary in the 13th century, but later on developments differed. Based on settlement history, medieval woodland cover was probably similar to that of today, and this continuity plays an important part in the region being part of a National Park
Long-Term Perspectives on River Floods. The Dominican Nunnery on Margaret Island (Budapest) and the Danube River
The study addresses the issue of the location of the Dominican nunnery on Margaret Island (formerly Insula Leporum, Budapest) from an environmental historical point of view. The building complex is situated extremely close to the Danube and has thus always been subject to flood danger. In this study, long-term trends in Danube flooding will be analysed to examine whether any shifts in flood magnitudes or in the hydrological conditions of the Danu…
The “waters leave their beds frequently”: A Western-Hungarian town and the flooding of the Rába/Raab River in the seventeenth century (1600–1658)
Climatic Changes in the Carpathian Basin during the Middle Ages. The State of Research
The aim of the paper is to present a summary of the current scholarship on the climate of the Carpathian Basin in the Middle Ages. It draws on the results of three substantially differing branches of science: natural sciences, archaeology and history are all taken into consideration. Based on the most important results of the recent decades different climatic periods can be identified in the scholarship. The paper attempts to summarize the differ…
