  • Metaphor Is to Dostoevskii as Metonymy Is to Tolstoi

    Open Access•James M Curtis•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 2

The terms metaphor and metonymy, as defined by Roman Jakobson, produce important insights when applied to the novels of Fedor Dostoevskii and Lev Tolstoi. The oeuvre of each novelist constitutes a remarkably consistent whole because it emanates from the creative unconscious, rather than from conscious thought processes. In Jakobson's view, metaphor involves the "combination of heterogeneous elements"; such elements in Dostoevskii include contrast…

  • Marshall McLuhan: The Man and His Message ed. by George Sanderson, Frank Macdonald, and: Marshall McLuhan: The Medium and the Messenger by Philip Marchand

    James M Curtis•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•1991

TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE Book Reviews 1141 claim that this essay is about Nazi biomedical technologies is, however, tendentious at best. There is a baffling essay by Carl Mitcham about “going to Church.” Mitcham argues that the church offers us a kind of counterexperience to the kind technology typically presents us. This may be so, but it could equally be claimed for lots of other experiences. I would love to write about going to a cricket match, …

  • Ephebes and Precursors in Chekhov's The Seagull

    Open Access•James M Curtis•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•1985•References: 2

Harold Bloom's The Anxiety of Influence takes the Freudian concept of an oedipal relationship between father and son as a model for the relationship that exists when one artist, the father figure (or precursor, as Bloom calls him), influences another artist (the ephebe, in Bloom's terminology). Bloom's work provides a desirable redefinition of standard treatments of influence and stylistic change in that it offers a dynamic, rather than a static,…

Thus ends the refrain to Play It All Night Long, Warren Zevon's tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd. The word play does not refer to performing on a musical instrument but rather to something technological-a record on a turntable, or a cassette. This meaning of the word here serves as a reminder that the history of innovations in modern popular music is largely a history of technological changes, and that one can therefore approach an analysis of that musi…

    James M Curtis•ARTICLE•boundary 2•1972•Cited by: 1

Both Marshall McLuhan and the French Structuralists have attracted wide popular attention, and hostile critics have used this fact as a pretext to dismiss them as mere fads. But no one has mentioned the similarities in method, perhaps because the men involved have such different intellectual backgrounds. While the Structuralists owe their intellectual allegiance to Marx and/or Saussure, McLuhan's synthesizing capacities bear no label, for he has …

  • The Function of Imagery in War and Peace

    Open Access•James M Curtis•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•1970•Cited by: 2

Tolstoy the man, whose awe-inspiring personality haunts us still, poses an enormous obstacle to those who wish to write about his work. One frequently encounters interpretations of the novels, plays, and short stories based on Tolstoy's aims in creating them and on what his consciously held values were or are believed to have been. Unfortunately for anyone who attempts this kind of evaluation, Tolstoy, one of the most complex and baffling men who…
