Liberty’s Grid: A Founding Father, a Mathematical Dreamland, and the Shaping of America
The experiences of family members attending an online addiction education program: A qualitative study
Family members of people experiencing addiction may experience increased stress and have difficulty coping with disrupted relationships, stigma, and isolation. Education programs for affected family members aim to assist in improving coping skills, understanding of addiction, and provide support, yet these have not been subjected to in-depth research, especially programs delivered by peers, or people with lived experience. This study explored the…
Followability, Necessity, and Excuse: Interpreting Kant’s Penal Theory
Philosophers traditionally interpret Kant as a retributivist, but modern interpreters, with reference to Kant’s theory of justice and problematic passages, instead propose penal theories that mix retributive and deterrent features. Although these mixed penal theories are substantively compelling and capture the Kantian spirit, their dual aspects lead to a justificatory conflict that generates an apparent dilemma. To resolve this dilemma and clear…
Online Peer-Led Support Program for Affected Family Members of People Living with Addiction: A Mixed Methods Study
This study reports outcomes from a preliminary study of an online, peer-led support group intervention for family members of people experiencing addiction. A mixed-methods design, comprising within-subjects analysis of intervention data and semi-structured interviews, was used. Seventy-eight participants received the intervention. Participants completed baseline and exit surveys: (i) General Self-Efficacy Scale, (ii) Personal Well-being Index, an…
Alaska in the Progressive Age: A Political History, 1896 to 1916
Thomas Alton's study of Progressive Era Alaska offers what he calls “a fresh slant” on the development of Alaska in the early twentieth century (p. 17). He emphasizes the critical role that national progressive reforms had upon the growing territory. The federal government became the catalyst for development with an expansion of territorial self-government, a workable coal-leasing law, and federal aid for the construction of Alaska's rail infrast…
An Edo Anthology: Literature from Japan’s Mega-City, 1750-1850
During the eighteenth century, Edo (today's Tokyo) became the world's largest city, quickly surpassing London and Paris. Its rapidly expanding population and flourishing economy encouraged the development of a thriving popular culture. Innovative and ambitious young authors and artists soon began to look beyond the established categories of poetry, drama, and prose, banding together to invent completely new literary forms that focused on the fun …
Volunteer roles and the benefits of volunteering: An examination of nonprofit housing cooperatives
This article explores if, and to what degree, being involved in different kinds of volunteer tasks in nonprofit housing cooperatives affects the development of one’s capabilities, social ties, and ability to influence the housing in which one lives. A unique data-set based on an evaluation of cooperative housing programs was used, and data were analyzed using logistic regression. Serving on the board of directors, organizing social events, and as…
Structured Empirical Evaluation of “Campbell’s Physiology Notes” and “Campbell’s Pathophysiology Notes”: A Cross-Cultural Evaluation of Two Nursing-Related Biosciences Textbooks
A three-country study was undertaken to assess the educational efficacy of two textbooks authored by the researcher. The same texts were distributed to groups of student nurses in the United Kingdom, Cambodia, and Kenya. A data collection tool was developed to obtain quantitative data and to ask open-ended questions on how useful readers found the texts to be. Quantitative data indicated that the books were useful in areas such as aiding understa…
Exploring Organizational Form in the Affordable Rental Housing Sector
The nature and benefits of different kinds of affordable rental housing providers, and particularly for-profit housing developers, have been contested by practitioners and scholars. We contribute to this debate by exploring whether the missions, the resources harnessed to build housing, the human resources, and the involvement of residents in decision-making differ based on organizational form. Using case study design, we examine two third sector…

The Ethical Organisation
People, with very few exceptions,1 are moral agents. In other words, their actions are governed by rules, explicit or implicit, which can be subjected to ethical appraisal. We may praise them for being courageous, charitable, just, sensitive, or magnanimous, or we may condemn their foolishness, envy or deviousness. We may neither praise nor blame, but wonder whether they were not fully responsible for what they did. Perhaps they were coerced or p…

Social Work and Kanadier Mennonites: Challenges and Rewards
The study to be reported on provides some insight and knowledge into the Kanadier Mennonites, a religious group in Alberta, Canada, for whom very little is known in regard to their health seeking behaviors. Social workers, using this information, will be in a better position to provide sensitive services to a religious group of people where communication with outsiders is not encouraged. Ministers, using bible interpretation, play an important ro…

Older Women and the Internet
This study was designed to explore the effects that training had on older adults' willingness to use the Internet to manage their health care. The most interesting result was that out of 70 self-volunteers, 58 were women. Results show that highly educated women who either own a computer or have access to one, and have low levels of anxiety toward computers, with strong feelings of self-efficacy toward computers and the Internet, and an internal l…
The Politics of Postal Transformation: Modernizing Postal Systems in the Electronic and Global World
The postal sector is a multi-billion dollar set of activities that touches billions of lives daily and continues to be one of the world's largest employers. Until recently all Posts were monopolies owned by governments in order to maintain a universal postal service. However, in response to technological and international competition as well as public disenchantment with postal subsidies and inefficiencies, governments have embraced a range of ne…

Softening Up Hard Science: Reply to Newell and Card
A source of intellectual overhead periodically encountered by scientists is the call to be "hard," to insure good science by imposing severe methodological strictures. Newell and Card (1985) have undertaken to impose such strictures on the psychology of humancomputer interaction. Although their discussion contributes to theoretical debate in humancomputer interaction by setting a reference point, their specific argument fails. Their program is un…

Notice of the Discovery of Eight Silver Rings or Ancient Wrist or Ankle Rings, in Cists near Rattar, Dunnet, Caithness
An idea of the form of these rings may be conveyed by supposing a square bar of silver, about \ inch on the side, cut in lengths of 7-J inches, and weighing about two ounces, to be bent, not on the flat, but on the angle, till the two extremities, which are a little flattened and rounded, approach within little more than an inch of each other. They are nearly the same size, weight, and shape, and they have no ornamental markings. One of them is s…

The Innovation Decision in Soviet Industry
In the nineteenth century, skeptics wondered whether socialism could succeed at all. After the Bolshevick Revolution launched a first great experiment in building socialism, it was conceded that a socialist economy could indeed allocate the nation's resources with reasonable effectiveness and could promote a high rate of growth. But in the 1970s technological change emerged as the chief topic of interest in economic circles, and socialism's poten…
