  • The Politics of Unfree Labour in Russia: Human Trafficking and Labour Migration

Mary Buckley•BOOK•Politics of Unfree Labour in Russia•2017

How, and why, did human trafficking out of Russia escalate at the beginning of the twenty-first century? Why did some labour migrants from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan find happy work situations in Russia whereas others became trapped in forced labour? This book focuses on human trafficking out of the Russian Federation since the collapse of the Soviet state and on labour migration into it from Central Asia, and on some internal movement…

    Mary Buckley•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2009•Cited by: 15•References: 6

The growing literature on human trafficking lacks survey data on citizens' attitudes towards it in states of origin. This article discusses the results of a nationwide public opinion poll conducted in June 2007 in Russia and explores the views of two focus groups. It examines Russians' thoughts about the causes and scale of human trafficking and beliefs about what should be done to tackle it, by whom and how. Both sets of data reveal pessimism ab…

  • The Soviet 'wife-activist' down on the farm

    Mary Buckley•ARTICLE•Social History•2001

Parties independent of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) were not formally permitted and non-party groups and movements needed the CPSU's approval to be allowed to form and survive. This was the situation up to Gorbachev's process of democratization. However, the CPSU had occasionally allowed the existence of social organizations which served the party and socialism and were perceived as ideologically non-threatening. One such was th…

  • Russian Interpretations of Crisis

Michael Buckley, Mary Buckley•ARTICLE•Journal of Communist Studies•2001

Across Russian historical periods there has been recurring discourse about the nature of 'crisis' and how best to solve it. In 1999 and 2000, parties and movements across the ideological spectrum variously defined its characteristics and consequences, illustrating a diversity and complexity in contemporary Russian political thought which offered competing recommendations for change. In contrast to the final years of the Soviet Union in 1990 and 1…

  • Was Rural Stakhanovism a Movement

    Mary Buckley•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•1999•References: 2

DESPITE A RICH SOVIET LITERATURE on rural shock work and stakhanovism, specialists in the West have either ignored these topics, given them cursory treatment or devoted attention to stakhanovism in heavy industry, where the movement began. The object here is to fill part of the gap and to focus on the question of whether a mass movement can be said to have existed at all. This probing is prompted by contradictory claims found both in the press an…

Until the late 1960s, most Western scholars studying the history, culture, social and political life and economy of Russia and the Soviet Union, paid scant attention to the participation and experience of women. The multifarious ways in which gender roles and perceptions of gender were influenced by and in turn influenced the heterogeneous cultures of the Soviet empire were largely ignored.
