  • Eleni-Anna Chlepa, Byzantine Monuments in Modern Greece. Ideology and Practice of Restorations 1833-1939

    Robin Cormack•ARTICLE•JOURNAL OF GREEK ARCHAEOLOGY•2024

This important book was first published in Greek in 2011, and it was immediately obvious that the author had systematically worked through archives and other sources to produce the most detailed account of restorations made in Byzantine monuments since 1833. I should say that the 2011 publication helped significantly to improve articles I myself wrote in 2013 about the mosaics of the monastery at Daphni. With welcome support from the A.G. Leventi…

  • Domenikos Theotokopoulos, The Baptism of Christ. A Recent Acquisition of the Municipality of Heraklion, Crete

  • Justice Legal Literature

Elizabeth Jeffreys, B H Stolte et al.•BOOK•The Oxford handbook of Byzantine…•2008•Cited by: 1

Byzantium has produced an extensive legal literature, though little in the way of legal theory. In the field of secular law, the reign of Justinian I brings the transition from Late Antiquity to Byzantium. Justinian's codification of Roman law in the Digest (and Institutes) and Code both brings ancient Roman law to its conclusion and forms the beginning of Byzantine law. The Digest is an anthology of the writings of Roman jurists of the first cen…

    Open Access•Robin Cormack•ARTICLE•Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies•1986•References: 2

Readers of the judicious paper by John Haldon on ‘“Jargon” vs. “the Facts”?’ Byzantine History-Writing and Contemporary Debates’ will have looked in vain for comment on the status of visual evidence. It is not that art is entirely unmentioned — a reference is made to the history of art and of cultural production in general as belonging to the history of the human past. But no consideration is given to the role of the visual as communication in By…

The important mosaics in the north inner aisle of the Church of S. Demetrios were largely destroyed in the fire of 1917. They had been unrecorded until ten years previously when their covering of Turkish plaster was removed. On 1 August 1907, the Turkish authorities set under way major repairs of the Casimir Çamii (Κασιμιὲ Τʒαμισί) in Thessaloniki, at that time a somewhat dilapidated building which had been last renovated in 1841. Operations were…
