This paper is concerned with a systematic review and analysis of the evidence of home-school partnership for learners with EAL in primary schools. It identifies i…

Barbara Skinner, Heng Hou et al.•ARTICLE•Irish Educational Studies•2023

A qualitative approach elicited the views and experiences of working parents through a social media parents’ group in Northern Ireland (NI). Only …

This review of John P. LeDonne’s Forging a Unitary State : Russia’s Management of the Eurasian Space 1650–1850 recognizes the author’s monumental effort to trace Russian civil, military, judicial, fiscal, economic, religious and educational policies and institutions that bound the Eurasian landmass in a Russian “unitary state” but criticizes his heavy-handed treatment of the Polish-Lithuanian lands gained by Russian during the partitions of Polan…

  • Managerialism and teacher professional identity

Barbara Skinner, Gerard Leavey et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Review•2021

In Europe, well-being in the workplace has increasing prominence in the policy and research agenda, and education is a key context in which the challenge of occupational stress has been reported. Traditionally, the ethos in school settings could be said to be shaped by the vocational motivation of employees; that is, a commitment to a social benefit through the development, support and improvement of the pupils, and this commitment used to overri…

  • Orthodox Missions to the “Ancient Orthodox” Lands in Belarus and the 1839 Uniate Conversion

    Barbara Skinner•ARTICLE•Canadian-American Slavic Studies•2019

A little known issue in the history of the conversion of Belarusian Uniates to Orthodoxy, formally completed in 1839, was the conflict between Russian Orthodox bishops who preferred to conduct missions among the Uniate population in Belarus to win personal conversions, incrementally, and the Uniate hierarchy who preferred the vossoedinenie , or general “reunification” en masse of the Uniate parishes. In the end, the Uniate strategy won the suppor…

  • Guidelines to Faith

    Open Access•Barbara Skinner•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•2015

In an effort to improve the work of the clergy and the religious understanding of the laity, Orthodox leaders in late eighteenth‐century Russia began to publish practical manuals on the practices of the church and the path to living a Christian life and achieving salvation. Such works formed pathways from higher theological discourse to the practical modes of pastoral work and lay instruction–to promoting “enlightenment” in the day‐to‐day work of…

    Brittany Skinner, Barbara Skinner•ARTICLE•Russian History•2014

In 1794 Catherine II launched a massive campaign to convert her new Uniate subjects to Russian Orthodoxy, which succeeded in cutting the number of Uniates in her empire in half within two years. Ukrainian Orthodox clergymen trained at the Kiev Academy were instrumental in this conversion effort, and their…

Critiquing prevalent secular explanations for the cossack-led uprising called Koliivshchyna that erupted in the Ukrainian borderlands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1768, this article identifies religion as the root cause of the uprising. COSSACKS, THE FIERCE WARRIORS ON HORSEBACK who ruthlessly pushed back the Russian frontier in the name of the tsars, seemingly passed into history with the rise of the communist regime and the modem Soviet army. Recent years, however, have witnessed a sudden and dramatic resurrection of the Cossacks as a distinct group and social force in the former Soviet Union. As Gorbachev presided over a crumbling Soviet empire, descendants of the Cossacks be…
