I hope my voice is heard.”: A mixed-methods study of youths’ perceptions of residential care
The Transition to Fatherhood, Contextual Stress, and Substance Abuse: A Prospective Analysis of Rural, Emerging Adult Black American Men
Background: Among Black American emerging adult men (∼aged 18–25), the early transition to fatherhood is often marred by numerous contextual stressors related to racial discrimination and socioeconomic instability. The strain of transitioning to fatherhood while experiencing high levels of contextual stress may evidence escalations in substance misuse over time as men may turn to substances to cope with the stress of complex life transitions. How…
Influence of Local Muscle Cooling on Mitochondrial-Related Gene Expression at Rest
The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of localized cooling of the skeletal muscle during rest on mitochondrial related gene expression. Thermal wraps were applied to the vastus lateralis of each limb of 12 participants. One limb received a cold application (randomized) (COLD), while the other did not (RT). Wraps were removed at the 4 h time point and measurements of skin temperature, blood flow, and intramuscular temperature were …
Heat Acclimation in Females Does Not Limit Aerobic Exercise Training Outcomes
Recent aerobic exercise training in the heat has reported blunted aerobic power improvements and reduced mitochondrial-related gene expression in men. It is unclear if this heat-induced blunting of the training response exists in females. The purpose of the present study was to determine the impact of 60 min of cycling in the heat over three weeks on thermoregulation, gene expression, and aerobic capacity in females. Untrained females (n = 22; 24…
No Mitochondrial Related Transcriptional Changes in Human Skeletal Muscle after Local Heat Application
The purpose of the study is to determine the impact of local heating on skeletal muscle transcriptional response related to mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy. Twelve healthy subjects (height, 176.0 ± 11.9 cm; weight, 83.6 ± 18.3 kg; and body composition, 19.0 ± 7.7% body fat) rested in a semi-reclined position for 4 h with a heated thermal wrap (HOT) around one thigh and a wrap without temperature regulation (CON) around the other (randomize…
Exercise- and Cold-Induced Human PGC-1α mRNA Isoform Specific Responses
Cold exposure in conjunction with aerobic exercise stimulates gene expression of PGC-1α , the master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis. PGC-1α can be expressed as multiple isoforms due to alternative splicing mechanisms. Among these isoforms is NT-PGC-1α , which produces a truncated form of the PGC-1α protein, as well as isoforms derived from the first exon of the transcript, PGC-1α-a , PGC-1α-b , and PGC-1α-c . Relatively little is known abo…
Synge on vagrancy: Labour, workhouses and the feeble-minded
This article demonstrates how two of J.M. Synge’s plays, In the Shadow of the Glen (1903) and The Playboy of the Western World (1907) document and reflect attitudes towards vagrancy and feeble-mindedness in Ireland at the dawn of the twentieth century. Adopting an intersectional perspective towards social class and labour, the article uses archival sources to juxtapose varied opinions on vagrancy, labour, workhouses and the social anxiety over fe…
Examining Strategic Fit and Misfit in the Management of Knowledge Workers
This study advances research on strategic human resource management by examining whether better firm performance depends on the alignment between an organization's human resources (HR) system and its innovation strategy. The authors argue that the unique problems underlying exploration innovation strategies and exploitation innovation strategies require core workers to engage in different types of knowledge-search and -combination behaviors. Alte…
Theatre and Residual Culture
This chapter interrogates The Playboy of the Western World in relation to Synge’s scientific analysis of fairy changeling folklore. This chapter proposes an alternative reading of the infamous disturbances that greeted the opening of the performance by looking at the relationship between the play and the ‘Clonmel horror’ of 1895. In March of that year Bridget Cleary, a successful twenty-six year-old dressmaker from South Tipperary, was ritually i…
Ireland, Memory and Performing the Historical Imagination
If the past is a foreign country then it has been colonized. This is a book about lost histories and faded memories of Irish theatre and performance. Winners write history, no one remembers history’s so-called losers. Until now.
Working at the Words/Music Interface: Models of Collaboration
This article sets out a collaborative model for teaching, performance and research in words/music relations based at Bangor University. The authors comment on a recent study day they held at the Oxford Lieder Festival with the pianist Sholto Kynoch, explain how his residency at the university has enabled collaborative teaching and research, and highlight the benefits of the collaboration for staff and students working in modern languages and musi…
Homeland Mythology: Biblical Narratives in American Culture
Since 9/11, America has presented itself to the world as a Christianist culture, no less antimodern and nostalgic for an idealized past than its Islamist foes. The master-narrative both sides share might sound like this: Once upon a time, the values of the righteous community coincided with those of the state. Home and land were harmoniously united under God. But through intellectual pride (read: science) and disobedience (read: human rights), th…
Youth as People: The Protective Aspects of Youth Development in After-School Settings
Youth development organizations have a common commitment to young people’s physical, emotional, and educational growth and development. A youth-centered atmosphere where young people feel supported and empowered by the community distinguishes successful programs from others that approach programming without considering young people the most important stake-holders. Programs serve youth best when the environments in which they function are intenti…
