The pen, the receiver and the pump
In this article, we explore young children's experiences of having a parent with type 1 diabetes (T1D). In our research we found that the children's knowledge about T1D was not age related, and that some had more in‐depth knowledge than others. This seemed related to how and what the parents taught them about diabetes, the individual child's curiosity and interest, and the parent's history with fluctuating blood sugar levels. Several children wer…
Transcending the Vernacular in Fictional Portraits of Translators
This essay examines depictions of translation in three novels by contemporary translingual writers: Andreï Makine’s Le testament français (1995), Michael Idov’s Ground Up (2009) and Olga Grjasnowa’s Der Russe ist einer, der Birken liebt (2013). All three authors are native speakers of Russian who write literary works in a non-native language and thus belong to a growing number of translingual writers from the Russian Federation and the former Sov…

Transcultural Identities in Contemporary Literature
In recent decades, globalization has led to increased mobility and interconnectedness. For a growing number of people, contemporary life entails new local and transnational interdependencies which transform individual and collective allegiances. Contemporary literature often reflects these changes through its exploration of migrant experiences and transcultural identities. Calling into question traditional definitions of culture, many recent work…
La simultanéité du présent”
“La simultanéité du présent”:Memory, History, and Narrative in Andreï Makine’s Novels Le Testament français and Requiem pour l’Est Julie Hansen (bio) Introduction Postmodernism placed a new focus on the story in history, problematizing notions of historical knowledge and questioning the possibility of objectively representing the past.1 Historians and literary theorists such as Linda Hutcheon, Dominick LaCapra, and Hayden White have pointed out s…
Stalingrad Statues and Stories
This article examines representations of war remembrance in the francophone Russian writer Andreï Makine’s novel La terre et le ciel de Jacques Dorme [The Earth and Sky of Jacques Dorme, 2003]. The novel portrays events and experiences of World War II from three temporal perspectives: that of the eponymous French pilot, who flies transports for the Soviets in the Alaska-Siberia air bridge during the war; that of the narrator as a child, who witne…

Macroscopic plant remains from Mediterranean caves and rockshelters
Macrobotanical remains from caves and rockshelters in the Mediterranean provide substantial information about past human use of the sites as well as the surrounding environment. The modes of deposition of both fresh and carbonized plant material in the past are varied and it is not always possible to distinguish among the geogenic, biogenic, and anthropogenic processes. Once deposited, seeds and other plant parts may be preserved through desiccat…

The empirical status of irrational beliefs in rational emotive therapy
This paper reviews recent studies of rational emotive therapy (RET) to determine whether there is empirical evidence to support the assertion that the reasons for therapeutic gains in RET are via changing irrational to rational beliefs. Before such issues can be examined, problems with the definition and measurement of irrational beliefs are first discussed and the evidence pertaining to the validity of current measures is addressed. Treatment ou…

The Olive in the Prehistoric Aegean
In 1972 Colin Renfrew suggested that the rise of Mycenaean civilization may have been made possible by the development of a polycultural triad of wheat, vine and olive in the Early Bronze Age. A careful examination of the botanical and archaeological evidence for the domestication of the olive lends little support to this aspect of the thesis. The palynological evidence from various points in Greece is inconclusive, but for most areas it would se…
