The Czech Avant-Garde Literary Movement Between the World Wars
The Czech Avant-Garde Literary Movement Between the Two World Wars tells the little-known story of the renaissance of Czech literary arts in the period between the two world wars. The avant-garde writers during this period broke down the barrier between the elite literary language and the vernacular and turned to spoken language, substandard forms, everyday sources such as newspapers and detective stories, and forms of popular entertainment such …

Sensitivity to long-term climate change of subpermafrost groundwater systems in Svalbard
Deep subpermafrost aquifers are highly climate-dependent, with the permafrost as an aquitard preventing groundwater recharge and discharge. A study from the high-arctic island of Spitsbergen, Svalbard, shows that during a glacial to interglacial phase, both the permafrost and the glacier regime will respond to climatic changes, and a glacier-fed groundwater flow system will vary accordingly. A full glaciation results in the melting of permafrost,…

Virtual Realism
Virtual reality has introduced what is literally a new dimension of reality to daily life. But it is not without controversy. Indeed, some say that a collision is inevitable between those passionately involved in the computer industry and those increasingly alienated from (and often replaced by) its applications. Opinions range from the cyberpunk attitude of Wired magazine and Bill Gates's commercial optimism to the violent opposition of the Unab…

The Design of Virtual Reality
The label Virtual Reality stuck to the new technology and just wouldn't let go. Since Jaron Lanier coined the phrase in 1986, it held the field through all opposition. Researchers at MIT shunned the phrase in the early 1990s. Instead of virtual reality, they spoke of virtual environments. The word in glowed with an aura similar to artificial intelligence, and computer scientists had already been burned once before by boldly promising to deliver m…
The Metaphysics of Virtual Reality
The Erotic Ontology of Cyberspace
How does the metaphysical laboratory fit into human inquiry as a whole? What status do electronic worlds have within the entire range of human experience? What perils haunt the metaphysical origins of cyberspace? These are some of the questions that this chapter poses. By exploring various philosophies, the chapter seeks to give an account of the way entities exist in cyberspace and their ontological status. Describing a human's relationship with…
Good-Bye, Samizdat
Good-bye, Samizdat offers the first collection of the best of Czechoslovakia's samizdat, underground texts from the era 1948 through 1990. Divided into three sections, the volume includes fiction, cultural and political works, and philosophical essays. The writings reflect the thought of some of Czechoslovakia's best-known minds--Klima, Vaculik, and Havel--as well as others yet unknown in the West. Taken together, they capture the artistic and in…

The Realization of Infinity
An incontestable horror of the still haunts us in those images devised by the ancient Greeks: Tantalus, Sisyphus, Prometheus. These are the as life without finality or purpose, life as repetition without novelty or redeeming insight. Tantalus is in agony as he bends down to drink the waters of an ever-receding river or reaches up to grasp the dangling fruit from a tree which springs up instantly to take them beyond his reach. Sisyphus too pushes …
