A pair of inscribed Anglo-Saxon hooked tags from the Rome (Forum) 1883 hoard
The importance of the hoard found in the excavations in the Forum at Rome in 1883, just outside the the House of the Vestal Virgins, has long been recognized by Anglo-Saxon numismatists, for it is the largest recorded source for the coinage of Æthelstan and Edmund. Archaeologists, art-historians and epigraphers have, however, failed to appreciate the significance for Anglo-Saxon studies of the pair of silver tags found with the coins (pl. VIII), …

In this article the arguments around shechita and animal protection in Scandinavia, traditionally viewed as liberal states, are explored. Animal protection often disguised antisemitic sentiments, and the debates in Norway and Sweden, which adopted anti‐shechita legislation, are compared to those in Denmark, which did not

This article offers a partial explanation of the collapse of parliamentary sovereignty at the close of Sweden's so-called Age of Liberty (1 719-1 772). It demonstrates that two orthodoxies-one constitutional and one economic-were firmly established by the 1.750s, that challenges to these orthodoxies arose between 1755 and 1765, and that open public debate after 1766 (freedom of the press law) produced challenges not only to these orthodoxies, but…
