III. “Geographic Perspectives on Soviet Central Asia”
A dramatic population increase coupled with a reduction in per capita investment is producing a “demographic cauldron” in Soviet Central Asia. This was the focus of Professor Lewis's December 7 lecture. In his presentation, Professor Lewis outlined the political, economic and social conditions that frame a grim picture for Central Asia. The region is plagued by an unfavorable convergence of factors: a rapidly growing rural population, especially …
The Migration of Russians Outside Their Homeland
The migration and settlement of Russians throughout the former Soviet Union in combination with rising nationalism have resulted in a set of conditions that will probably result in considerable national conflict. From an operational perspective, the subjective definition of a nation is the most useful. A nation is a self-defining community whose members claim a common ancestry and a common destiny. They also claim a common geographic origin, the …
Family-Based Interventions for Helping Drug-Abusing Adolescents
This article describes the efficacy of two family-oriented, outpatient drug interventions for 84 adolescents who had used and abused drugs. Together, the two brief drug interventions appeared to significantly reduce the drug use of nearly one-half of the adolescentts who received the two family-focused drug interventions. It is surmised that this slccess was due partly to the fact that both outpatient interventions focus on the sxystemic treatmen…

Marital Quality: A Review of the Seventies
The quality of marital relationships continues to be the most widely studied topic in the field. Trends during the 1970s in research on marital quality and related concepts (happiness, satisfaction, adjustment, etc.) are summarized. Fathers and the Postparental Transition
Little is known about the contemporary impact of children's leaving home upon fathers. This dearth of information is unfortunate since more fathers appear to be investing time and concern into child-care. This article reports the findings from a random sample of 118 fathers, 22% of whom reported feeling unhappy over their last child's having left home. This unhappiness was associated particularly with fathers' having fewer children, being older, …

Emotional Intimacy among Men
Although males report more same‐sex friendships than women do, most of these are not close, intimate, or characterized by self‐disclosure. Many barriers exist to emotional intimacy between men, some stemming from the demands of traditional male roles in our society, such as pressures to compete, homophobia, and aversion to vulnerability and openness, as well as from the lack of adequate role models. Exercises to increase self‐disclosure, openness…
Parents and peers: Socialization agents in the coital behavior of young adults∗
In spite of the plethora of books, films and talk about sex, comparatively little is known about the interrelations between sexuality and socialization (Gagnon 1966). It is true that the patterning of premarital sexual behavior has been traced to such factors as differences in social class, religiosity and irreligiosity differential sex role conditioning, peer reference groups, and conservatism and liberalism (Kinsey et al, 1953; Locke, 1951; Kan…

The paper attempts to provide both a methodological and substantive contribution by (1) introducing techniques of curvilinear regression and correlation data analyses to address empirically the questions raised by the findings qfsome previous …
Early Irrigation in West Turkestan
In the early period, from the fifth millennium B.C. to the fifth century A.D., irrigation techniques evolved in West Turkestan in response to problems imposed by the natural environment, and similar spatial patterns of irrigation development occurred at different times in areas with similar natural conditions. On the piedmonts, there was a progression from naturally irrigated basins to artificial basins fed by small irrigation systems, but only s…
A Longitudinal Test of a Developmental Framework for Premarital Dyadic Formation
A longitudinal analysis of 91 dating couples over a period of two years is utilized as an initial test of a developmental framework generated to account for premarital dyadic formation (PDF). The longitudinal test substantially accounts for the dissolution and the continuance of dyads as outcomes of the degree to which the couples had earlier achieved PDF in five of six pair processes, i.e., the achieving of similarity perception, pair rapport, s…

New Wine Fom Old Wineskins: Marital Power Research
Methodological sophistication and conceptual complexity in the area of marital power has resulted in more questions than answers. The greatest danger of such a situation is a cessation of research motivated by fear of added mistakes, and supposedly justified by the lack of better measures and conceptualizations. Two particular stumbling blocks have been annoying differences between husbands' and wives' perceptions and low correlations between dif…

Producing change in attitudes toward abortion∗
Abortion has been a chief method of population control from ancient days down to present times (McCary, 1967). It has been estimated that 30,000,000 abortions are induced throughout the world each year, 1,000,000 of which take place in the United States alone (Pilpel, 1969). Gebhard, et al (1958) have suggested that 22 per cent of married women have had at least one abortion. Unfortunately, nearly all of these abortions were illegally obtained; a…

Itema: An Improved Item Analysis Procedure
An item analysis and test-scoring procedure was developed based on a model proposed by Menne (1970). In addition to standard distractor analysis and test scoring, ITEMA includes an interface with data produced by optical scanning equipment. The program can select any par…
Sam: A Simple Averaging Model of Impression Formation
A Simple Averaging Mode (SAM) of impression formation was developed as an institutional demonstration. One-digit demographic or descriptive traits and an affective reaction are input for each perceived encounter. The model uses a weighted averaging procedure similar to that suggested by Anderson (1965), to combine these trait perceptions into an affective response. Traits are weighted according to (a) the frequency of past experience relative to …
