    Anthony Bogues•ARTICLE•differences•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Arguing that racial slavery was a foundation of the modern world and of capitalism, this essay details the historical ways in which the organization of debt and credit networks were integral to the Atlantic slave trade. The author contends that the enslaved body of the African was itself commodified and, as such, opened new technologies of rule. • We Who Were Slaves

    Anthony Bogues•ARTICLE•Souls•2018

Working from the injunction of C. L. R. James about the requirement to understand the “new forms created in the context of slavery,” this essay argues that there is a political requirement for the study of the intellectual history and political thought of the African enslaved. The essay also notes that the Black enslaved body represented a distinct form of labor in which it produced commodities while itself being a “property in person.” Such a hi…

  • Empire of liberty: Power, desire, and freedom

    Anthony Bogues•BOOK•Empire of liberty•2010

In this thoughtful and timely consideration of the nature of American power and empire, Anthony Bogues argues that America's self-presentation as the bastion of liberty is an attempt to force upon the world a single universal truth, which has the objective of eradicating the radical imagination. The writing of popular history in Jamaica has a tradition which begins inside the anticolonial movement and develops with the Marxist Left in the 1970s. This essay examines how the major texts of this tradition describe the historical 1938 events. It suggests that while the tradition foregrounded popular movements, it did so within frames which negated the political ideas of these groups.
