Historical Dyadic-Level Latent Profiles of Chinese Maternal Parenting and Early Childhood Behavior
Cultural and historical contexts shape parenting practices, yet little is known about their variability in China pior to recent societal changes. This study uses historical data collected from 471 mothers and their preschool children in urban China before the early 21st century to examine parenting patterns and their co-occurring links to child behavior. We confirmed a multidimensional structure of parenting in this sample. Further, using latent …
Longitudinal associations between popularity, peer acceptance, and academic performance in adolescents
Longitudinal associations between popularity, peer acceptance, and academic performance were examined in Chinese 7th ( n = 880; 400 girls; M age = 13.33, SD = .64) and 10th grade ( n = 646; 342 girls; M age = 16.76, SD = .75) adolescents across three academic years. Growth curve analysis revealed parallel changes in popularity and academic performance in both middle- and high-school students whereas a positive association between the trajectories…
Are adolescent leaders prosocial and aggressive
This longitudinal study was initiated to assess the predictors of peer- and teacher-identified Chinese adolescent leaders. Participants were 764 8th grade (14.42 years, 348 girls) and 783 11th grade (17.67 years, 427 girls) students that completed two waves of data collection separated by 1 year. Prosocial behavior, aggression, and the interaction between aggression and effortful control concurrently and longitudinally predicted peer- and teacher…

Predicting Substance Use and Deviant Behavior from Prosociality and Sociability in Adolescents
Prosocial Attitudes toward Money from Terror Management Perspective
Based on Terror Management Theory (TMT), we suggest that spirituality and prosocial attitudes toward money have a similar defensive function in resisting existential anxiety. In mortality salient (MS) situations, both spirituality and prosocial money attitudes afford symbolic immortality by self-transcendent connections. In four studies, we found that activating death awareness weakened people’s subjective love of money (Study 1) and predicted in…
Longitudinal associations between popularity and aggression in Chinese middle and high school adolescents
The longitudinal associations between popularity, overt aggression, and relational aggression were assessed in middle school and high school cohorts drawn from a large urban Northwest Chinese city. The middle school (n = 880; 13.33 years.) and high school samples (n = 841; 16.66 years.) were each followed for 2 years. In the concurrent regression analyses, overt aggression was more strongly and consistently associated with popularity than relatio…
Secular Examination of Spirituality-Prosociality Association
Religious beliefs in Chinese cultural background, especially in Chinese secular society, have rarely been systematically investigated. The nonreligious-based population in China endorses certain supernatural beliefs or has related transcendent experience, even though they usually claim themselves as non-believers. Therefore, the current research examined the spirituality-prosociality association in Chinese secular background, demonstrating how sp…
Impact of Adult Attachment Anxiety on Deception Judgments
Several psychologists have paid attention to individual differences in deception detection, but only a few studies have found significant results. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between attachment anxiety and deception judgment when there are no obvious cues to distinguish lies from truth, and to examine the moderating effect of motives. Participants were instructed to judge each of 10 audios on whether they were true or fals…
The Effect of Senders’ Perceived Ability to Control Emotion on Raters’ Deception Judgments
The present studies aimed to examine whether the raters’ impressions of the senders’ ability to control emotion could influence the raters’ judgments of deceit and to explore the underlying mechanism. It was proposed that perceived emotional control ability would influence individuals’ deception judgments either by itself or by interacting with actual lie-related behaviors. Two experiments were conducted to examine our hypotheses. The results rev…

The impact of social support on postpartum depression
This study aimed to investigate the impact of perceived social support on the depression of postpartum women, and mainly focuses on confirming the mediator role of self-efficacy. A total of 427 new mothers from two general hospitals in Beijing accomplished the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, General Self-efficacy Scale, and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. The results revealed that both social support and self-efficacy si…
Civilised Behaviour
In order to check whether (un)civilised behaviour can be a valid indigenous intergroup comparison dimension for Chinese people, three studies were conducted based on stereotypic explanatory bias (SEB). Study 1 examined the media representation of Chinese and Western (un)civilised behaviours, and the SEB results suggested ingroup derogation of Chinese people regarding civilised behaviour. Study 2 aimed to use a more empirical approach to further a…
Implicit and Explicit Self-Esteem
Results of studies on the relationship between implicit (ISE) and explicit (ESE) self-esteem have been inconsistent, possibly because of the moderating influence of factors such as gender, response latency, and cognitive load. We examined the moderating effect of cultural tendency on the relationship between ISE and ESE in the context of Chinese culture. We developed a Chinese version of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to measure participants…
Popularity and Social Preference in C hinese Adolescents
This study examined the characteristics associated with popularity and social preference in 769 14‐year‐old adolescents (54 percent boys) from mainland China. Consistent with findings from other countries, popularity and social preference were moderately correlated and overt aggression was positively correlated with popularity but negatively correlated with social preference. Prosocial behavior, athletic skill, dating, academic achievement, and m…
Ethnic identity salience improves recognition memory in Tibetan students via priming
Current research provides new evidence for the influence of salience of ethnic identity on group-reference effect, contributing to the application and extension of social identity theory among minority group people
The Bad Apple Effect and Social Value Orientation in Public-Goods Dilemmas
Two studies were conducted to replicate and extend previous findings on the effect of uncooperative behavior on group cooperation (the "bad apple" effect). Study 1 (56 women, 40 men; M age = 23.5 yr.) manipulated information about contributions from the bad apple, controlling for overall contributions to a group account. Study 2 (50 women, 34 men; M age = 20.4 yr.) compared the effects of a bad apple and a good apple on cooperation. The social va…
The Influence of Leader on Group Member’s Cooperation in Common Resource Dilemmas
The Structure and Characteristics of Contemporary Chinese Values
Aversive Parenting in China
This study assessed the combined and differential contributions of Chinese mothers and fathers (in terms of spouse-reported physically coercive and psychologically controlling parenting) to the development of peer-reported physical and relational aggression in their preschool-age children (mean age of 5 years). Results of the two-group (boys and girls) latent sum and difference structural equation model showed that combined parenting effects were…
