The Farm Workforce Modernization Act: Finding Common Ground at the Crossroads of Immigration and Labor Policy
This case study of the 2019 Farm Workforce Modernization Act explains how immigration policy is framed and how compromise is generated among legislators and interest groups with conflicting goals. This research relies on a content analysis of publicly available primary documents dating from 2019 to 2020, and a qualitative survey of 20 farmworker advocates. We argue that three overarching frames defined the policy problem and thus shaped policy pr…

Yet amid this turn to wholesome and responsible food choices, the lives and working conditions of farmworkers are often an afterthought. Labor and the Locavore focuses on one of the most vibrant local food economies in the country, the Hudso…
Cross-undressing in Colette: Performance, gender and music-hall labour practice

Such tensions culminate in a rehearsal sce…

Immigrant Farmworker Advocacy: The Dynamics of Organizing
This paper explores contemporary labor rights advocacy among Latino farmworkers and their allies in New York state, drawing on data from participant observation and field interviews conducted over nearly a decade (from 2000 to 2008). The principal finding is that power inequalities within advocacy networks constrain the actions of “weaker” members, who, in turn, respond with unconventional tactics of resistance within the networks themselves. Thi…
