Pine woodland fire dynamics mirror industrial history at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, West Virginia, USA
Fire is an important biophysical process in pine ( Pinus ) and mixed pine-oak ( Quercus ) forests and woodlands across the Central Appalachian Mountains. Decades of fire exclusion, however, particularly on public lands, have resulted in a well-documented homogenization of species composition and forest structure. Our objective was to inform management and restoration efforts by expanding on previous dendroecological research at New River Gorge Na…
Broadening the Pool of Precollege Engineering Teachers
Contribution: This single case study represents a unique attempt to examine a music teacher’s experiences as he took on the challenge of teaching a high school level engineering course. The study contributes to the growing body of research and conversations around science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) versus non-STEM beliefs, perceptions, and practices in precollege education. This work informs future teacher professional devel…
Climate and ecological disturbance analysis of Engelmann spruce and Douglas fir in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem
The effects of anthropogenic climate change are apparent in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), USA, with forest die-off, insect outbreaks, and wildfires impacting forest ecosystems. A long-term perspective would enable assessment of the historical range of variability in forest ecosystems and better determination of recent forest dynamics and historical thresholds. The objectives of this study were to (1) develop tree-ring chronologies for …
Greening cultural policy
This article focuses on greening cultural policy within a sustainable development context. We examine shortcomings of major public-policy responses to the ecological crisis, linking this to the ambivalent philosophical heritage of anthropocentric worldviews that underpin ideas about the relation of culture to non-human nature. This ambivalence is reflected by weak environmentalism in the cultural policy arena, exemplified by surprisingly non-gree…
Greenwashing Culture
Greenwashing Culture examines the complicity of culture with our environmental crisis. Through its own carbon footprint, the promotion of image-friendly environmental credentials for celebrities, and the mutually beneficial engagement with big industry polluters, Toby Miller argues that culture has become an enabler of environmental criminals to win over local, national, and international communities. Topics include: the environmental liabilities…

The Propaganda Machine Behind the Controversy Over Climate Science
The essay examines various communication strategies for advocating acceptance of climate science in the face of psychological and ideological impediments. It surveys some key literature, offers case studies of Lego, Shell, Greenpeace, Edelman, and public relations, and culminates with a hortatory logic based on the recent Papal encyclical. The focus is on issues pertaining to the United States but with examples and ideas from elsewhere

Tree-ring δ 13 C tracks flux tower ecosystem productivity estimates in a NE temperate forest
We investigated relationships between tree-ring δ ^13 C and growth, and flux tower estimates of gross primary productivity (GPP) at Harvard Forest from 1992 to 2010. Seasonal variations of derived photosynthetic isotope discrimination ( Δ ^13 C) and leaf intercellular CO _2 concentration ( c _i ) showed significant increasing trends for the dominant deciduous and coniferous species. Δ ^13 C was positively correlated to growing-season GPP and is p…
Neglected Elements
This chapter applies a materialist, ecological approach to analyze the physical environment in which media production takes place, focusing on media‐related occupations across global supply chains. We argue that conventional production studies have too narrowly circumscribed this sector and that more comprehensive research on media production labor is needed. We critique the idealism and pro‐growth ideology that draws production studies toward bo…
Greening Cultural Labor
In the early twenty‐first century, environmentally friendly accounting practices in the creative industries were confined to site‐specific budgets of individual films or studio operations. Any external environmental costs were either ignored or written off as too hard to measure. This chapter considers the media's future by imagining a new kind of accountancy freed from the bonds of corporate media. Richard Maxwell and Toby Miller have devised an…
Old, New and Middle-Aged Media Convergence
This essay analyzes the myths that swirl around digital media convergence – managerial efficiency, experiential immediacy, global interactivity and interpersonal connectedness – and counters these with an ecological historiography that shows how so-called managerial efficiencies waste natural and human resources; the vaunted experiences of immediacy and interactivity induce ignorance of inter-generational effects of consumption, including long-te…
The Cambridge Companion to Fiction in the Romantic Period
While poetry has been the genre most closely associated with the Romantic period, the novel of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries has attracted many more readers and students in recent years. Its canon has been widened to include less well known authors alongside Jane Austen, Walter Scott, Maria Edgeworth and Thomas Love Peacock. Over the last generation, especially, a remarkable range of popular works from the period have been re…

Commentary and Criticism
Between March and December 2008 Jane Arthurs was co-editor, with Usha Zacharias, of the Commentary and Criticism Section of this journal, which included topical short essays themed around issues of significance to feminist media studies either from a methodological, critical or political point of view. This article covers the re-visioning of gender politics in relation to media accounts of the environment

The Cultural Labor Issue
The Cultural Labor Issue
The division of labor really is everywhere, isn't it? For the purposes of this issue of social semiotics, for example, the editors of the journal delegated authority for generating and reviewing content to guests, who in turn roughly divided the labor between recruiting and communicating with authors (Toby, Los Angeles, USA) versus evaluating their work without knowing their names (Rick, New York, USA) (Hence abiding by agreeably anal norms of ac…

Henry Mayhew and the Life of the Streets
Lamb in the 1820s and Dickens in the 1830s had written about some of those who made their living or advertised their services in the streets of London: beggars, chimney sweeps, cab drivers, the vendors of baked potatoes and kidney pies. When, in the late forties, Henry Mayhew began his extensive study of the street-folk, he found reason to cite both these chroniclers. London Labour and the London Poor , however, is an enterprise different in kind…

Ethics and identity in global market research
The commercial process that matches global goods and services to local tastes demands knowledge, and hence surveillance, of cultural differences and identities. This article focuses on the strategic position held by market research within the global infrastructure of consumption and confronts the ethical problematic arising from the encounter between research interviewers and people. O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. (Psalm 139) Keywor…
