  • The Oxford Handbook of Caste

Surinder S Jodhka, Jules Naudet•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Caste•2023

Beginning with the 1990s, the subject of caste has seen a profound increase in interest among scholars. What was until then approached as a fossilized tradition of the ritual-obsessed Hindus refusing to see the progressive spirits of the emerging world and studied as a branch of anthropology, suddenly began to be seen as a complex reality deeply embedded in a range of institutions and social practices, attracting scholars from a wide range of dis…

    Open Access•Aminah Mohammad-Arif, Jules Naudet•ARTICLE•South Asia Multidisciplinary…•2020

Academia, science, and freedom of speech are under assault in India. This is not a metaphor: scholars and students are being attacked in many ways, including physically. As a journal specialized on South Asia, we consider that our core mission—producing scientific knowledge about societies—is also being threatened. This situation prompted the SAMAJ editorial board to bring together academics to reflect on this current state of affairs. Our main o…

Here we discuss the existence of an Asian development path, the role of states in development, that of businesses, that of the money market and the banking system, integration into the world trading system and the question of the cultural model. , as well as that of the imperatives of sustainable development. Can we consider that there is an Asian development path? What is the relevance of the Japanese 'geese in flight' development model defined …

    Open Access•Jules Naudet, Adrien Allorant et al.•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2018•Cited by: 9•References: 49

This article proposes an analysis of the social space inhabited by the CEOs and Chairmen of the top 100 Indian companies in 2012, using a Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA). The analysis aims to understand the internal divisions to be found in the field of economic power, by looking at the divisions along the lines of educational capital, inherited capital (family capital), caste and social capital (drawing on a network analysis of interlocki…

  • Seeking the Indian Social Space: A Multidimensional Portrait of the Stratifications of Indian Society

    Open Access•Mathieu Ferry, Jules Naudet et al.•ARTICLE•South Asia Multidisciplinary…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 22

This article takes as its specific starting point the idea that the Indian society constitutes a relational space, marked by the interdependency of various sub-spaces. It more precisely aims at producing a synthetic representation of the Indian social space. In order to do so, we draw upon the 2011-2012 data from the “Household Consumer Expenditure” survey of the National Sample Survey Office. The analysis leads us to produce a multidimensional t…

  • Introduction. Towards a Sociology of India’s Economic Elite: Beyond the Neo-Orientalist and Managerialist Perspectives

    Open Access•Surinder S Jodhka, Jules Naudet•ARTICLE•South Asia Multidisciplinary…•2017

Is there such a thing as an “Indian way of doing business”? Many publications, whether academic or not, indeed assert the singularity of Indians’ approach to business, often mobilizing an orientalist gaze and reifying the peculiar conception of business that supposedly prevails in the subcontinent. This special issue of SAMAJ proposes to move away from a focus on “doing business” in order to rather dedicate more attention to the role of economic …

  • The Indian exception: The densification of the network of corporate interlocks and the specificities of the Indian business system (2000-2012)

    Jules Naudet, Claire-Lise Dubost•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2016•Cited by: 8•References: 36

This article attempts to explain the peculiar evolution of the topology of the Indian interlocking directorates network during the periods of liberalization and corporate governance reforms. A study of interlocks among the top 50, 100 and 250 National Stock Exchange of Bombay companies in 2000 and 2012 shows that the Indian network does not follow the global trend of other ‘fracturing’ and ‘disintegrating’ corporate networks. Our results in fact …

    Jules Naudet•ARTICLE•Critique internationale•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This study is based on 150 interviews carried out in three countries among individuals of working class origin who have experienced very rapid social advancement. My approach consists of three stages. First, I establish a typology of the many forms taken by attempts to rehabilitate their working class origins among those interviewed. Second, I draw upon this typology to open up avenues for reflecting on what makes it possible to present working c…

    Open Access•Jules Naudet•ARTICLE•Sociologie du Travail•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 36

  • Paying back to society: Upward social mobility among Dalits

    Open Access•Jules Naudet•ARTICLE•Contributions to Indian Sociology•2008•Cited by: 19•References: 16

This article discusses the way upward social mobility is subjectively experienced by Dalits in India. It proposes a phenomenological analysis of upward social mobility, looking particularly at the way in which upwardly mobile persons deal with the tension between their group of origin and their new group. The main argument is that a moral imperative to 'pay back to society' structures the experience of a sharp change in class and status. The spec…
