The future as aesthetic experience
In this paper, we examine the question how future studies can productively engage with the future by considering how art is engaging. This question is pertinent, as doubts about the future are increasingly urgent, while the need to engage with the future is not sufficiently addressed by the quantitative growth of future studies. In the case of climate change, for example, the future consequences of global temperature increase are well-known, but …
Empty Minds
Symphony orchestras today acknowledge the need to make their art relevant again in today's societies and innovate their practices. When these innovations regard audience participation, they challenge the ritualised formats of classical music performance and disrupt normative, social, and artistic traditions. The orchestra therefore presents an interesting case to develop a better understanding of the value-laden dynamics of innovation in public p…
A sounding monument
in 2012, a new pipe organ was unveiled in amsterdam. This organ, the van straten organ, was designed and built as a replica of an organ originally built in 1479 by peter gerritsz. In this paper, we examine how the gerritsz organ became the van straten organ by examining how contemporary organ builders were able to translate aspects of the original wind chest, pipes and keyboard into the new organ. By contextualising the meaning of the van straten…
Confined Mobilities
This paper examines the return journeys of Indonesian migrant domestic workers to their home towns. When migrant workers return home, the Indonesian government sets them apart from other travellers in order to protect the migrants from extortion in the airport environment, and assist them during their return to their home villages. We investigate how this separate passage results in a mobility regime that produces differences between regular trav…
Composing Claims on Musical Instrument Development
The historiography of musical instrument design has long been dominated by organology: the science of musical instruments and their classification. Recently, however, scholars from Science & Technology Studies (STS) have also taken up the study of musical instrument development. This article reviews the newest organological and STS literature on musical instruments to show which questions and approaches STS has added to the rich work of the organ…
Co-ordinating Passages
This article contributes to the ‘mobilities turn’ in social science by proposing new concepts and methods for analysing the ways in which people draw upon a range of resources to manage everyday mobility. We distinguish between the ‘projects’ people want to achieve and the ‘passages’ they need to go through in order to do so. We also distinguish between ‘pre‐travelling’ and ‘re‐ordering’. The analysis builds on insights from time‐geography, mobil…
Exchanging Travel Speed
Exchanging Travel Speed:Time Politics in Mobility Practices Peter Peters (bio) Imagine the main hall of a traffic information center on a Wednesday morning. A high video-wall displays in schematic form the highways in a densely populated, urban region. The video screens are covered with green, yellow, orange, and red dotted lines, which indicate the average speeds of traffic on any given stretch of the region's highways. Green indicates that the …
