A Philosophical Challenge: The Structure and Performance of Interdependent Autonomous Human-Machine Teams and Systems
The concept of autonomy in human-machine teams and systems has become increasingly important, yet the concept of autonomy remains elusive to researchers and to philosophers; it either evokes non-autonomous swarms under central or a leader’s control, or that the teammates require a level of intelligence as they perform, but today, intelligence does not generalize from independent humans to human-machine systems. However, some researchers locate i…
Conceptualizing a social sustainability framework for energy infrastructure decisions
Public consent for the geologic disposal of highly radioactive wastes and spent nuclear fuel
Global agreement exists for the policy of the geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive wastes, provided that there is public consent. To gain consent, social scientists recommend the less competitive approach of consensus rather than the majority rule (MR) of democracies. But, we hypothesize, competition for public consent from MR best improves the quality and stability of choice
Robust Intelligence (RI) under uncertainty: Mathematical foundations of autonomous hybrid (human-machine-robot) teams, organizations and systems
To develop a theory of Robust Intelligence (RI), we continue to advance our theory of interdependence on the efficient and effective control of systems of autonomous hybrid teams composed of robots, machines and humans working interchangeably. As is the case with humans, we believe that RI is less likely to be achieved by individual computational agents; instead, we propose that a better path to RI is with interdependent agents. However, unlike c…
Conservation of Information: Reverse engineering dark social systems
A broad appeal for a new theory of interdependence, 'iota', has been requested for the science of complexity in a special issue of Science, for social network analysis by the National Academy of Sciences, for effects-based operations by the US military, and for modernizing the fields of law and economics. We have proposed a new theory of 'iota' for organizations and systems that already appears to exhibit some validity. It is expressed in a physi…
The Social Quantum Model of Dissonance: From Social Organization to Cultural Evolution
Distinguishing between a group and the aggregate of individuals who compose the group remains an unsolved theoretical problem. Luce and Raiffa concluded that traditional theory based on the perspective of a rational individual cannot distinguish between these two utilities, precluding an analytical model. The obstacle to advancing beyond Luce and Raiffa with multiple-agent systems, including those with “swarm” intelligence, is that they lack the …
The university as decision center
We have developed a theory of interaction uncertainty relations between the conjugate variables of action and observation. From it, we have established that cooperation in training and education is best suited for the solution of well-developed problems (e.g. using existing techniques to build bridges), but that competition works best for the solution of ill-defined problems (e.g. developing new technology). However, cooperation and competition a…
Subsequent behavior can erase evidence of dissonance-induced attitude change
Warm-Cold Perceptions and Expectations of Future Contact
Darley and Berscheid (1967) found that the anticipation of personal contact increased liking. Contrary to this finding, Love, Mason, Owens, Mobley, and Lawless (1988) noted that the expectations of personal contact which threatens reduced all liking. In the fkst of two pilot studies, using a method similar to Kelley (19501, and in a 2 x 2 factorial design, a warm confederate was liked more than the same confederate as cold, however, when subjects…
