Economic Growth, Education, and Terrorism: A Re-Analysis
The performed cross-national tests with negative binomial regression models support the presence of a curvilinear relationship between the quantitative expansion of education (measured with mean years of schooling) and terrorist attack intensity. Growth of schooling in the least educationally developed countries is associated with a significant tendency towards the growth of terrorist attack intensity. This tendency remains significant when contr…
Economic development, education, and terrorism: A quantitative analysis
Quantitative cross-national tests using negative binomial regression confrmthe existence of a curvilinear relationship between the amount of people receiving an education and the level of terrorist activity in certain countries. In countries with the lowest level of educational modernization, the growth of education is accompanied by a signifcant trend towards an increase in the intensity of terrorist activities, and this trend turns out to be si…
Unemployment as a Predictor of Socio-Political Destabilization in Western and Eastern Europe
Powerful political destabilization processes in recent years (such as Arab Spring) have brought attention to unemployment as a possibly important factor in political destabilization. However, the results of different studies, devoted to exploring the relationship between unemployment and instability, are highly contradictory with respect to the direction, strength, and significance of the detected correlations, especially in high income economies…
Urbanization Under Stalin and the Decline of Soviet Science
The destruction of the Russian peasantry during the Stalin era changed urban life in Russia dramatically due to migration to the cities, bringing with it cultural forms that were to become the hallmark of Soviet society. More recently, anti-Semitic prejudice depleted the cadres of Russian science and spurred emigration once that became possible. Now the impoverishment of the academy threatens to finish the job

Log-Periodic Oscillation Analysis Forecasts the Burst of the 'Gold Bubble' in April - June 2011
The analysis of the gold price series for 2003-2010 employing both the methodology developed by Didier Sornette and the one of the authors allows forecasting the collapse in gold prices in April - June 2011. The article discusses both the scenarios that could allow avoiding this collapse, and the possibilities of the "gold bubble burst" leading to the second wave of the global economic crisis
A Spectral Analysis of World GDP Dynamics: Kondratieff Waves, Kuznets Swings, Juglar and Kitchin Cycles in Global Economic Development, and the 2008-2009 Economic Crisis
The article presents results of spectral analysis that has detected the presence of Kondratieff waves (their period equals approximately 52-53 years) in the world GDP dynamics for the 1870-2007 period. To estimate the statistical significance of the detected cycles a new methodology has been applied. The significance of K-waves in the analyzed data has turned out to be in the range between 4 and 5 per cent. Hence, this spectral analysis has suppo…
Analysis of Power-Structure Fluctuations in the "Longue Durée" of the South Asian World System
A time series of political power configurations of the Indic world system 500 BC - AD 1800 is examined by way of Poisson process analysis, phase transition analysis, Markov process analysis, mathematical modeling and simulation, information theory, analysis of autocorrelation, periodogrammetry, and time-spectral analysis (including epoch superposition). The Indic system displays an unusual propensity toward bipolarity and unipolarity. The behavio…
