Cotton Imperialism: Manchester Merchants and Cotton Cultivation in West Africa in the Mid-Nineteenth Century
Popular Classes and Cohabitation in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Paris
This article aims to show that we do not know what we believe we do about the extent and meaning of recourse to cohabitation among popular classes in Paris in the first half of the nineteenth century. Discourse on cohabitation and illegitimacy is deconstructed, revealing that analyses of popular behavior are based on problematic data and flawed methods. If cohabitation was widespread, this was because of the legal and economic constraints imposed…

Perceptions and Realities of the Urban Margin: The Rag Pickers of Paris in the First Half of the Nineteenth Century
The urban margin, be it economic or social, spatial or cultural, is difficult for the historian to study because of conceptual and methodological problems, because of the lacunar nature of surviving sources and because much of what we now know about those who were deemed marginal comes to us from the biased discourse of contemporary elites. The purpose of this article is, first, to demonstrate that, despite these manifold difficulties, the margin…

The Economies of the Partition of Africa: Methods and Recent Research Trends

Saint-Simonism and Messianism: The Case of Gustave d'Eichthal
The career of Gustave d'Eichthal (1802-86) never quite fulfilled the promise of his youth, and he recognized this himself, for he died murmuring to his eldest son that he still had much to do. He found study and writing difficult and worked only in bursts. His mood alternated between optimism and deep depression, and throughout his life he reproached himself for his timidity and lack of success as a proselyte. He often found personal relations di…
