    Between 1986 and 1995, there appeared to be a 100% increase in the number of wheelchair users in England and Wales. This article reports some of the findings of a study designed to explore the social implications of this increase. Specifically, it examines the various explanations for the increases and concludes that whilst demographic changes or research methodologies are not responsible, the more likely causes are changing prescription practice…

    This article examines the response of Scottish Presbyterian reformers to the socioeconomic and political dimensions of the ‘Edwardian Crisis’. For such individuals the circumstances of the early twentieth century, despite the undoubted difficulties they posed, offered the opportunity to bring about a modern version of the ‘godly commonwealth’, with the principal means of realizing this being Christianized social reform.     Clements, in an account of Akan vowel harmony [1981b], has a separate autosegmental tier for the harmonic feature category [Advanced Tongue Root].     Three stones were discovered during grave digging in the churchyard of Papil. The stones comprise a cross-slab, an interlaced cross and a socketed cross-stone. These are described and illustrated and a list of all known sculptured stones from Shetland is provided. One of the stones which has a long-shafted Latin cross, with flared arms and almost square base, is unique in Scotland although parallels can be found in Ireland. The other two stones a…
