  • Gods in Disorder

Robert N Mccauley, George Graham•ARTICLE•Journal for the Cognitive Science…•2021

Commentators’ concerns occasion clarifications of positions in Hearing Voices and Other Matters of the Mind. Philosophical naturalism holds that philosophers needlessly handicap their projects if they ignore the sciences. Ecumenical Naturalism maintains that similar forms of cognition and experience associated with religiosity and mental disorders may submit to similar scientific explanations. The by-product theory, which looks to the operations …

The cognitive science of religions’ By-Product Theory contends that much religious thought and behavior can be explained in terms of the cultural activation of maturationally natural cognitive systems. Those systems address fundamental problems of human survival, encompassing such capacities as hazard precautions, agency detection, language processing, and theory of mind. Across cultures they typically arise effortlessly and unconsciously during …

  • People's War? Self-Interest, Coercion and Ideology in Nepal's Maoist Insurgency

    George Graham, George A Graham•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2007•Cited by: 6•References: 6

This paper analyses the micro-level processes by which ordinary rural Nepalis came to support the Maoist insurgency. Working through the implications of orthodox collective action theory, it finds that Maoist cadres are unlikely to have been strongly motivated by considerations of acquisitive self-interest. However, the participation of many may have been partly secured through various forms of coercion. Non-instrumental motivations for participa…

  • When Self-Consciousness Breaks: Alien Voices and Inserted Thoughts

Christian Perring, G Lynn Stephens et al.•ARTICLE•The Philosophical Review•2001

In this book, G. Lynn Stephens and George Graham examine verbal hallucinations and thought insertion as examples of what they call alienated In such cases, a subject is directly or introspectively aware of an episode in her mental life but experiences it as alien, as somehow attributable to another person. Stephens and Graham explore two sorts of questions about verbal hallucinations and thought insertion. The first is their phenomenology -- what…

What is the nature of contemporary political science? What shared concerns bind us together as a discipline, providing a common definition and direction to our intellectual enterprise? These questions were on my mind as I organized the section on formal and normative political theory for the 1989 APSA meetings. Initially, I had wanted to sponsor a panel to address the nature of formal and normative theory. I knew I was a bit uncertain about the p…

  • Honesty and Intimacy

Current professional and lay lore overlook the role of honesty in developing and sustaining intimate relationships. We wish to assert its importance. We begin by analysing the notion of intimacy. An intimate encounter or exchange, we argue, is one in which one verbally or non-verbally privately reveals something about oneself, and does so in a sensitive, trusting way. An intimate relationship is one marked by regular intimate encounters or exchan…

  • Rousseau's Concept of Consensus

    Open Access•George J Graham, George Graham•ARTICLE•Political Science Quarterly•1970•Cited by: 1

The idea of consensus is critical to an understanding of the political philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Indeed, it was for him the heart of society, as he would posit that it must be held in the heart of each and every man within society. Its importance is indicated by the form in which he presented the basic question facing man. That question is political: Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.... What can render [social bonds] le…
