  • The Passions, Power, and Practical Philosophy: Spinoza and Nietzsche Contra the Stoics

Aurelia Armstrong•ARTICLE•The Journal of Nietzsche Studies•2013•Cited by: 2

This article reviews the influence of Stoic thought on the development of Spinoza's and Nietzsche's ethics and suggests that although both philosophers follow the Stoics in conceiving of ethics as a therapeutic enterprise that aims at human freedom and flourishing, they part company with Stoicism in refusing to identify flourishing with freedom from the passions. In making this claim, I take issue with the standard view of Spinoza's ethics, accor…

  • Transindividuality and Philosophical Enquiry in Schools: A Spinozist Perspective

Open Access•Juliana Merçon, Aurelia Armstrong•ARTICLE•Journal of Philosophy of Education•2011•References: 2

We suggest in this paper that the practice of philosophy with children can be fruitfully understood as an example of a transindividual system. The adoption of the term ‘transindividuality’ serves two main purposes: it allows us to focus on individuation as a process and at the same time to problematise some of the classical antinomies of Western philosophy that continue to inform our understanding of the relation between individuality and communi…

  • The Methods of the Greek Physiognomists

    Open Access•Aurelia Armstrong, A MacC Armstrong•ARTICLE•Greece and Rome•1958

Physiognomy (φυσιογνωμονία), the systematic diagnosis of a man's character from his bodily features, originated as a branch of Greek medicine. True, it had antecedents in Babylonia, but the Babylonian science was more concerned with the prediction of the vicissitudes of a man's life than with deciphering his mental and moral qualities, and even deliverances dealing with such qualities were couched in the omen form. Prophetic physiognomists or met…
