  • Power: Myth and Reality

    Open Access•Henryk Skolimowski•ARTICLE•Alternatives Global Local Political•1983•Cited by: 2

This article sees the current identification of power with brute physical force (power of coercion) as an unjustifiable oversimplification of the variety of meanings of power. It analyzes the concept of power within a deeper philosophical framework in order to discover its present distortions. It argues that on a deeper level the source of power is authority, which is born of extraordinary qualities that human beings are capable of possessing. Th…

  • The Cultural Model of Development: Alternative to Faustian Technology

    Open Access•Henryk Skolimowski•ARTICLE•Alternatives Global Local Political•1980

The paper identifies two types of science, the Promethean and the Faustian, each inspired by a particular myth and sustained by a particular eschatology, which determine both the concept of development and the choice of technology for achieving it. Both Prometheus of the Greek myth (who stole fire from heaven at the cost of terrible personal suffering) and Faust of the mediaeval German legend (who sold his soul to the devil) were in quest of know…

  • The Social Character of Technological Problems: Comments on Skolimowski's Paper

    I C Jarvie, Henryk Skolimowski•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•1966

There is great deal in Professor Skolimowski's very interesting paper with which I fully agree, especially, perhaps, his thesis that technology is not to be identified with science and that it has different philosophy and methodology. If there is single problem that is central to Skolimowski's paper it is perhaps his statement that science has single aim, the pursuit of knowledge or truth; can similar, simple aim be ascribed to technology? Skolim…
