Machine Learning Mixed Methods Text Analysis
Assessing student knowledge based on their writing using traditional qualitative methods is time-consuming. To improve speed and consistency of text analysis, we present our mixed methods development of a machine learning predictive model to analyze student writing. Our approach involves two stages: first an exploratory sequential design, and second an iterative complex design. We first trained our predictive model using qualitative coding of cat…
The North Korean Card in Us-China Relations
For two decades, successive US administrations have overplayed the importance of pressure tactics and Chinese support for denuclearizing North Korea. However, the continued development of North Korea's nuclear and missile programs reflects not only gridlock in US-North Korea relations, but also Pyongyang's growing suspicions over China's commitment to the Kim regime. By supporting and enforcing tougher sanctions, Beijing has only reinforced North…

Mariculture with seaweed and mussels for marine environmental restoration and resources production
At present there is increased worldwide interest in mariculture of seaweed, which is not only an activity to produce resources, but it is also a way to contribute to solve the eutrophication problem. Mar Piccolo of Taranto (South Italy) represents a typical polluted enclosed sea. Our proposed biotechnology is based mainly on the cultivation of macroalga Gracilaria verrucosa, which is naturally occurring in this basin, and the mussels Mytilus gall…

Systematic collection of Ulva and mariculture of Porphyra
There is a widespread need for active intervention in eutrophicated marine ecosystems in order to reduce the occurrence of green tides, hypoxia and other ill effects. A significant contribution to such efforts can be made by harvesting natural biomasses and using aquaculture techniques to alter the species composition in the target area. By cultivating species with intrinsic economic value, the large costs associated with harvest and removal of u…

Home Maintenance Behavior and the Elderly
The results of a survey of 722 Wisconsin home owners are used to examine if older home owners maintain their homes as well as their younger peers. Possible reasons for the apparent age-related differences in home maintenance behavior are explored.A model is proposed to identify and organize variables that may influence the initiation of home maintenance work. Results indicate that older owners report less home maintenance. Differences are more pr…

The Cheju-do Rebellion
The Cheju-do Rebellion JOHN MERRILL INTRODUCTION Cjheju-do is known today mostly for its booming tourism, its hardy diving women, and its lush orange groves. Located some fifty miles below the southernmost tip of the Korean peninsula, and about twice that from the nearest landfall in Japan, the 700-square-mile island is dominated by the extinct volcanic crater of Halla-san, at 6,000 feet the highest peak in South Korea. Cheju-do is now an easy ho…
