Rendered Obsolete: Energy Culture and the Afterlife of US Whaling. By Jamie L. Jones
In the June 1940 issue of Fats and Oil Studies, the agricultural economist Karl Brandt published a stately infographic depicting the “weight of a blue whale in terms of elephants and oxen.” At the top of the diagram is a handsome drawing of a blue whale in profile, its body submarine-straight, its mouth slightly agape. Below the whale, 25 diminutive elephant silhouettes march in three neat rows. Underneath the elephants, an orderly herd of 150 li…
Introduction to Inconvenient Realities: The Emergence and Resilience of Parastates
Within the growing literature on de facto states and disputed territories, the parastate stands as the most contentious challenge to international sovereignty and one of the greatest threats to regional security. Parastates are territorial entities that have unilaterally declared independence and control territory claimed by another state. Though parastates have been a part of international studies since the 1960s, the collapse of the Soviet Unio…
The Durability of Parastates: Declarative Statehood in the Absence of Constitutive Sovereignty
This article assesses the characteristics of the parastate; a territorial entity that operates outside the formal structures of international law and sovereign recognition. The primary obstacle for parastates transforming declarative statehood into constitutive sovereignty is the nature of their creation, which is seen as a violation of another state’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Parastates are thus prevented from becoming equal member…

Ending the impasse in Kosovo: Partition, decentralization, or consociationalism
This paper argues that current Western-backed approaches to conflict resolution in Kosovo have failed to alter Serbia's policy toward the region and have contributed to the exacerbation of political tensions between Belgrade and Brussels, while deepening ethnic cleavages between Serb and Albanian communities. While there is no possibility of Kosovo returning to Serbia's control, there is an equal unlikelihood that Serbian-populated regions of Kos…

In search of a democratic cultural “alternative”: Serbia's European heritage from Dositej Obradović to Otpor
Developments in Serbia's democratic consolidation over the past six years have been both ongoing and progressive. Yet the establishment of a widely shared and collectively accepted political culture that has departed from the ethnocentric and euroskeptic narratives of the Milošević era remains incomplete. Additionally, the failure by Serbian socio-political elites in appropriating alternative narratives of Serbian history and culture that demonst…
Fabricating Authenticity: Modeling a Whale at the American Museum of Natural History, 1906-1974
Historians of science have in recent years become increasingly attentive to the ways in which issues of process, matter, meaning, and value combine in the fabrication of scientific objects. This essay examines the techniques that went into the construction--and authentication--of one such scientific object: a model of a blue, or "sulfur-bottom," whale manufactured at the American Museum of Natural History in 1907. In producing their model, exhibi…
Gender Disparities in Percutaneous Coronary Interventions for Acute Myocardial Infarction in Pennsylvania
BACKGROUND: It has been shown that women are at greater risk than men of not receiving screening and treatment services for coronary heart disease. The purpose of this research was to determine whether there were gender disparities in the use of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Pennsylvania in 2000 and, if so, whether outcomes were affected. METHODS: Data included 10,170 patients t…
