Leveraging Context for Perceptual Prediction Using Word Embeddings
Word embeddings derived from large language corpora have been successfully used in cognitive science and artificial intelligence to represent linguistic meaning. However, there is continued debate as to how well they encode useful information about the perceptual qualities of concepts. This debate is critical to identifying the scope of embodiment in human semantics. If perceptual object properties can be inferred from word embeddings derived fro…
Discourse coherence modulates use of predictive processing during sentence comprehension
Context has been shown to be vitally important for comprehension. Lexical processing is facilitated when words are highly predictable given their local sentence context, suggesting that people pre-activate likely upcoming words to aid comprehension. However, this facilitation is affected by knowledge about the global context in which comprehension takes place: people predict less when in an environment where expectations are frequently violated. …

Descartes's Theory of Distinction
In the first part of this paper I explore the relations among distinctness, separability, number, and non‐identity. I argue that Descartes believes plurality in things themselves arises from distinction, so that things distinct in any of the three ways are not identical. The only exception concerns universals which, considered in things themselves, are identical to particulars. I also argue that to be distinct is to be separable. Things distinct …

Enlisting the Help of U.S. Undergraduates in Evaluating International Teaching Assistants
N The steady increase in the numbers of international graduate teaching assistants (ITAs) in U.S. universities has prompted most large public universities to initiate both training programs and screening procedures in order to ensure that those ITAs whose first language is not English have adequate spoken English skills for the task of presenting instructional material to U.S. undergraduates. The focus in most of this work is on the training aspe…
Predicting Success for International Teaching Assistants in a U.S. University
In this analysis of the performance of 233 international graduate assistants during a 2-year period, we attempted, via Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores submitted at the time of application, to predict which of these students would eventually receive positive or negative recommendations to be assigned teaching duties. Students who received negative recommendations were found, on average, to have s…
St. Thomas Aquinas on the Halfway State of Sensible Being
I n a provocative article challenging the received interpretation of St. Thomas Aquinas's theory of sensation, Sheldon Cohen has argued that holds that the reception of a sensible form, whether natural or spiritual, is always a physical event.)l Whether or not we agree with the validity of this interpretation, there would seem to be no room for controversy regarding its content. But such is not the case. In replying to Cohen, John J. Haldane take…

Paying Attention to Pronunciation: The Role of Self-Monitoring in Perception
U It is widely recognized that a crucial component in developing effective second language pronunciation is, in fact, the development of particular listening skills. In many textbooks ostensibly dedicated to improving ESL pronunciation, a substantial number of exercises are devoted to making sure that the student, as listener, can first recognize the types of sound distinctions that are phonemic in English. As Prator and Robinett (1985) claim in …

Learners in Transition: Evidence from the Interaction of Accuracy and Self-Monitoring Skill in a Listening Task
Based on the observation that some ESL learners appear to regress in performance during language learning when traditional test accuracy scores are used, another aspect of students' performance was investigated. Using a confidence-rating scale, the self-monitoring abilities of 67 intermediate ESL students enrolled in a University-level pronunciation/listening course were assessed over a seven week period and compared with test accuracy scores. Re…

The Unity of Descartes's Man
One of the leading problems for Cartesian dualism is provide an account of the union of mind and body. This problem is often construed be one of explaining how thinking things and extended things can causally interact. That is, it needs be explained how thoughts in the mind can produce motions in the body and how motions in the body can produce sensations, appetites, and emotions in the mind. The conclusion often drawn, as it was by three of Desc…

Dimensions Of Profile Judgments As A Function Of Instructions, Cue-Consistency And Individual Differences
It was hypothesized that paired-comparison judgments of multiple-cue profiles would be a joint function of instruction set,- cue-inconsistency, and individual differences. Thirty-one subjects judged all possible pairs of 22 profiles containing eight cues in an own-control, counterbalanced design. A comparison of instructions providing no attribute for judging similarity with those which did provide an attribute revealed systematic differences wit…

Social Acquiescence and "Education"
VOL. XX. No. 4, 1960 THE recent articles concerning acquiescence set raise some impor-tant questions regarding its place among current psychological con-cepts. He considers acquiescence as a stable personality characteristic which, when present in the extreme, describes one who &dquo;... resembles Sinclair Lewis ’ ’Babbitt’--an unquestioning conformer to…
