Congruency drives “conflict adaptation” independent of conflict
While performing distractor-interference tasks, people exhibit smaller congruency effects (i.e., less interference from distractors) after incongruent trials than after congruent trials. The influential conflict-monitoring model (Botvinick et al., 2001) posits that such congruency sequence effects (CSEs) reflect "conflict adaptation": increased control following heightened conflict in a previous trial. An alternative view posits that objective tr…

On the Ends and Endings of Protest
The ending of a protest is a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of the dramaturgy of politics. Retrospectively, a movement’s ending is what allows for an evaluation of what it has achieved. In this way, how a movement ends correlates, sometimes obliquely, with its ends. In this paper, we ask how a performance analysis of endings might help us re-evaluate protest and its afterlife. We examine three protest movements that ended in different ways: …
Robust priors for regularized regression
Induction benefits from useful priors. Penalized regression approaches, like ridge regression, shrink weights toward zero but zero association is usually not a sensible prior. Inspired by simple and robust decision heuristics humans use, we constructed non-zero priors for penalized regression models that provide robust and interpretable solutions across several tasks. Our approach enables estimates from a constrained model to serve as a prior for…

Performing Post-Truth
Performing Post-Truth: An Interview with Director Ashlie Corcoran Matt Jones (bio) In my essay in the March 2020 (72.1) issue of Theatre Journal titled “Sarin Gas Heartbreak: Theatre and Post-Truth Warfare in Syria,” I examine how two theatre productions respond to the difficult problem of ascertaining the truth about the Syrian Civil War by adopting what I describe as techniques of “post-truth.” The term “post-truth” entered the journalistic lex…
Sarin Gas Heartbreak
During the Arab Spring, protesters sought to circulate to the world images of atrocities being carried out by the regime of Bashar al-Assad. But their attempts to capture the “truth” of what was happening was often undermined by, among other things, the low-resolution of the camera phones they were using. This failure also reveals wider problems in the activist tactic of using images to expose power. Although a photograph may provide a document o…
Our robotic future and how we should react
Let me tell you a story, a frightening disturbing one, a story about a future we would never have purposefully set out to create. As this is a scary tale, we need to begin in the dark so close your eyes and picture in your mind's eye the first memory you have of a robot. What was it?Perhaps, like me, it was a tin wind-up figure like the one pictured in Image 1.In my case, it sparked into life when I hauled it out of the sack Father Christmas left a…

Ending Cold War fears
This article considers responses to the Mass Observation Project’s Gulf Crisis sub-directive. It argues firstly that observers’ responses show how a potential war within Iraq in 1990/1991 was framed by fear of global conflagration and suggests that these fears were rooted in memories of the later cold war. Secondly it argues that the Gulf War was interpreted as a rapid and successful conflict, which dispelled pre-war fears of global conflagration…

Mega Screens for Mega Cities
This article considers how networked large urban screens can act as a platform for the creation of an experimental transnational public sphere. It takes as a case study a specific Australia-Korea cultural event that linked large screens in Federation Square, Melbourne, and Tomorrow City, Incheon, 1 through the presentation of SMS-based interactive media art works. The article combines theoretical analyses of global citizenship, mobility, digital …

Bayesian Fundamentalism or Enlightenment? On the explanatory status and theoretical contributions of Bayesian models of cognition
The prominence of Bayesian modeling of cognition has increased recently largely because of mathematical advances in specifying and deriving predictions from complex probabilistic models. Much of this research aims to demonstrate that cognitive behavior can be explained from rational principles alone, without recourse to psychological or neurological processes and representations. We note commonalities between this rational approach and other move…
