    This chapter examines the relationship between blackness, queer vulnerability, and the mechanics of movement and dance. It uses anecdotes to make an argument for downward movement and concaveness as movement techniques, responses to the physical threats intrinsic to black ontology.     This article focuses on popular-press assessments of New York City Ballet principal dancer Wendy Whelan as a way to consider, first, how gender norms affect dance criticism, specifically in ballet, and, second, what might constitute a feminist approach to ballet criticism.
