  • Feminism and Socialism in China (Routledge Revivals)

Elisabeth Croll•BOOK•Feminism and Socialism in China…•2013

First published in 1978, Feminism and Socialism in China explores the inter-relationship of feminism and socialism and the contribution of each towards the redefinition of the role and status of women in China. In her history of the women’s movement in China from the late nineteenth century onwards, Professor Croll provides an opportunity to study its construction, its ideological and structural development over a number of decades, and its often…

  • Prevention of prescription opioid abuse

Open Access•Elisabeth Croll, Richard C Denisco et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of the American…•2011

Dentists cannot assume that their prescribing of opioids does not affect the opioid abuse problem in the United States. The authors suggest that dentists, along with other prescribers, take steps to identify problems and minimize prescription opioid abuse through greater prescriber and patient education; use of peer-reviewed recommendations for analgesia; and, when indicated, the tailoring of the appropriate and legitimate prescribing of opioids …

  • The Intergenerational Contract in the Changing Asian Family

    Elisabeth J Croll, Elisabeth Croll•ARTICLE•Oxford Development Studies•2006

A contemporary Asia-wide concern is the common fear that modernization or urbanization, migration, the demographic transition, new lifestyle aspirations and the spread of Western values have emphasized individual rather than collective familial interests and thus eroded filial obligations. This paper, based on ethnographic studies across East, South-East and South Asia, suggests that far from being eroded, the generations have taken new steps to …

  • From the girl child to girls' rights

    Elisabeth J Croll, Elisabeth Croll•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2006•Cited by: 17

Within the development context, much of the new interest in girls has occurred under the rubric 'the girl child', which has become an increasingly common phrase on international and national platforms. This paper, based largely on field and documentary research across East, South and Southeast Asia, suggests that this platform has not translated into effective, sustained or transformative national programmes or local projects in support of girls.…

  • The negotiation of knowledge and ignorance in China’s development strategy

    Elisabeth Croll•CHAPTER•An Anthropological Critique of…•2002

In recent years there have been several attempts to redefine development in order that it incorporate more equal forms of exchange between the agencies of development or change and local populations with the explicit aim of reducing divisions between variously termed ‘superior’ ideologies of development and ‘inferior’ systems of local knowledge. One of the strategies frequently suggested to mediate the two is that development policies and project…

  • New peasant family forms in rural china

    Elisabeth Croll•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•1987•Cited by: 25•References: 12

This article explores the responses of peasant households in China to the quite new and radical demands made on their resources as a result of the various recent rural economic reforms....[It attempts] to identify current changes in size, structure and activity of domestic and kin groups, and to analyse the new socio-economic relations within and between households. It argues that in order to mobilise and maximise their labour and other resources…

The author argues that prior documentary preparation for the field research and appropriate use of the data obtained are important preconditions for its success. Open Access•Elisabeth J Croll, Elisabeth Croll•ARTICLE•Sociologia Ruralis•1978•References: 4

In China the establishment of female solidarity groups is an important component of the strategy to redefine the position of women. This paper describes the basis on which solidarity groups have been founded, their formation in rural villages and analyses the degree to which they have legitimised and institutionalised women's participation in social production and their access to the control of economic and political resources. Finally the articl…
