  • Human behaviors during the Covid-19 pandemic and their consequences

    Open Access•Robert Martins•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

COVID-19 accounted for about 1.1 million deaths in the United States, 365,000 in 2020 alone, and about 7 million worldwide. Due to underreporting, the actual global COVID-19-related deaths were likely between 15 and 30 million, with around 4 million in 2020. As devastating as these numbers were, without any behavioral changes—whether voluntary or mandated—deaths in the United States would have been about 8 million, and global deaths about 115 mil…

  • Adaptation constraints and prospects for future research priorities in lowland rice-based farming systems: Learning experiences from Northwest Cambodia

Open Access•Van Touch, Rebecca Cross et al.•ARTICLE•Environment Development and…•2023

Sustainable agricultural development not only addresses global food insecurity but may also alleviate poverty by enriching the lives of millions of smallholder farmers. Improving the sustainability and profitability of agriculture where smallholders are dominant creates profound impacts because small landholding farmers produce approximately 70–80% of the global food. The need for a thorough understanding of the factors affecting farmers’ adoptio…

Open Access•Mathew Muma, Robert Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Social Science•2022

The purpose of the study was to determine agriculture teacher differences in beliefs and perceptions about sustainable agriculture (SA) and the associations of these with the teaching of SA in the 12 states of the Midwest US. A descriptive design using self-administered structured questionnaires with Likert measurements was adopted. A stratified random sample of 844 teachers were self-administered the questionnaires. Data were analyzed by ANOVA b…

  • La norme comme universel du langage

Robert Martins, Robert Martin•ARTICLE•Journal des savants•2020

The norm can be thought of as a universal monitoring function common to all languages. There are many arguments to support this viewpoint. The norm can be seen as twofold. One of its functions is set within language as a system so that on the one hand it monitors and restricts the unlimited regularities a language has and, on the other, it controls purely local regularities which can thereby be assimilated to irregularity. This aspect echoes the …

  • Jasper M. Trautsch. The Genesis of America: U. S. Foreign Policy and the Formation of National Identity, 1793–1815

    Open Access•Robert Martins, Robert W T Martin•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2020

The emergence of an American national identity in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries presents something of a puzzle. Though English peoples and culture played a predominant role, a relatively diverse population settled what had been British North America. Despite lacking a single shared history, culture, or ancestry—at least compared to the European antecedents—citizens of the new country came to see themselves as “Americans” by t…

  • A ‘Peaceable and Orderly Manner’: Town Meetings and other Popular Assemblies in the American Founding

    Open Access•Robert Martins, Robert W T Martin•ARTICLE•Journal of Deliberative Democracy•2019

The New England town meeting has often been seen as the archetypical deliberative citizen forum (see, e.g., Mansbridge 1980). More recently, political theorists have begun to appreciate the way in which any particular public forum might be better understood as part of the larger deliberative system (Parkinson, Mansbridge, 2012). Much of this work draws on modern-day examples (Parkinson 2006). But a return to the American founding era reveals that…

  • Navigating Without a Roadmap: Challenges of Early Alzheimer’s Caregivers With Their Health Care Team

Open Access•Max Zubatsky, Mayra Aragon-Prada et al.•ARTICLE•Global Qualitative Nursing Research•2016

Caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease are willing to make large sacrifices to attend to the everyday demands of their loved one's health. Many still lack the necessary skills, information, and resources from medical professionals needed to fully execute this role. The aim of this study is to explore the challenges that first-time Alzheimer's caregivers encountered with members of their health care team around a loved one's diagnosis.…

  • James Madison and Popular Government: The Neglected Case of the “Memorial

    Open Access•Robert W T Martins, Robert Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Polity•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 5

James Madison has long been seen as a liberal thinker and in many respects an elitist one. More recently, a few efforts have been made to understand him as a consistent and even "fervent" democrat, at least after 1790. This article re-examines a classic source for Madison's early liberalism, the "Memorial and Remonstrance against Religious Assessments" (1785), to establish Madison's pre-1790 analysis of—and genuine commitment to—the popular eleme…

  • The rule of law in Zimbabwe

    Robert Martins, Robert Martin•ARTICLE•The Round Table•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 10

The relevance of the concept of the rule of law in the development of modern Zimbabwe is considered alongside the diplomatic and political events of colonialism and liberation. While the rule of law was observed in the 1980s, successive constitutional amendments led to a strengthening of presidential power and a consequent weakening of the safeguards against oppression. As the violence associated with the seizure of land escalated, the author des…

  • Between Consensus and Conflict: Habermas, Post-Modern Agonism and the Early American Public Sphere

    Open Access•Robert W T Martins, Robert Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Polity•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 6

Efforts thus far to bridge the distance between Habermasian public sphere theory and post-modernism have failed, and recent studies only reify the bifurcation. Some theorists trace this problem to misreadings of Habermas's recent works that overemphasize the weight he places on consensus. I argue instead that Habermas's stress on consensus is genuine and first emerged in his early historical work on the public sphere, wherein he focused on an abs…

  • The Free and Open Press: The Founding of American Democratic Press Liberty, 1640-1800

Michael Kent Curtis, Robert Martins et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Legal History•2004

The current, heated debates over hate speech and pornography were preceded by the equally contentious debates over the and open in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Thus far little scholarly attention has been focused on the development of the concept of political press freedom even though it is a form of civil liberty that was pioneered in the United States. But the establishment of press liberty had implications that reached far beyond …

  • Promoting freedom of expression in the Commonwealth

Robert Martins, Robert Martin•ARTICLE•The Round Table•2002

When the 1991 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting adopted the Harare Declaration, it committed the Commonwealth to 'democracy, democratic processes and institutions, the rule of law and fundamental human rights'. The essential precondition to achieving these goals is freedom of expression. Were free expression to be limited throughout the Commonwealth, the Declaration could become a hollow historical curiosity. The Commonwealth Association f…

    Open Access•Robert W T Martins, Robert Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Political Research Quarterly•1997•Cited by: 5•References: 15

This article addresses several recurring questions regarding the study of the history of political thought. It does so through theoretical explora tion and practical application. First, conceptual history, a recent sympa thetic alternative to the "Cambridge School" of Quentin Skinner, J. G. A. Pocock, and others, is drawn on in order to outline a general theory of the actual conditions and processes through which politically significant conceptua…

Andrew Macfarlane, Robert Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Communication•1983

The denial of the right of working journalists to engage in a political activity is justified on the ground of maintaining their appearance of objectivity.
