Picking the P M
Choosing a Prime Minister: The Transfer of Power in Britain, by Brazier, Rodney. Oxford University Press. 196 pp. £80.00 It is a matter of some surprise to most people that there is no law providing for the existence of the office of Prime Minister, specifying its functions and powers, qualifications for office, length of tenure, and method of appointment and removal from office. This is principally because the UK still lacks a written constituti…

Older People and the Enterprise Society
The UK, like most developed economies has an ageing population. In 1901 nearly one in seven were aged 50 and over but by 1997 this had doubled to one in three (ONS 1999) a trend that will continue over the next twenty years (Scase 1999:13). Accompanying this shift has been a burgeoning debate on the roles and involvement of older people in society and the economy (Laslett 1996; Phillipson 1998). Job Quality in Small Businesses
Studies of employment change have reported with varying emphasis, the superior job-generation performance of small compared with large firms. One deficiency in this area of research, however, is on the attributes of jobs in small firms and this has led to much speculation. Therefore, evidence is examined from a survey of 106 independent electrical and electronic engineering firms in Dorset (Class 33 and 34, 1980 Standard Industrial Classification…

Personality Types Among Abnormal Homicides
The main personality types occurring among abnormal homicides were determined by means of a cluster analysis of MMPI profiles of fifty-six Broadmoor patients. The analysis yielded four independent profile types, by which it was possible to classify four-fifths of the sample. These were identified as: (1) an over-controlled-repressor type characterised by an absence of reported disturbance, but a marked tendency to make use of denial and avoidance…
