  • Petition, Prostration, and Tears

    Open Access•Dale Kinney•ARTICLE•Religions•2024•References: 20

This article examines the evidence for performative prayer in early Roman catacomb painting from the perspective of an art historian. Praying (orant) figures are a dominant theme of third-century painting. Although the orant pose is generally regarded as symbolic, strong evidence connects at least one of the figures with the intercessory prayers offered by the order of widows. Following the "Constantinian turn" in the fourth century, a different …

  • Urban Developments in Late Antique and Medieval Rome

Ann Karin van Dijk, Dale Kinney et al.•BOOK•Urban Developments in Late…•2021

A narrative of decline punctuated by periods of renewal has long structured perceptions of Rome's late antique and medieval history. In their probing contributions to this volume, a multi-disciplinary group of scholars provides alternative approaches to understanding the period. Addressing developments in governance, ceremony, literature, art, music, clerical education and the city's very sense of its own identity, the essays examine how a variet…

  • Liturgy, Space, and Community in the Basilica Julii (Santa Maria in Trastevere)

    Open Access•Dale Kinney•ARTICLE•Acta ad archaeologiam et artium…•2019

The Basilica Julii (also known as titulus Callisti and later as Santa Maria in Trastevere) provides a case study of the physical and social conditions in which early Christian liturgies 'rewired' their participants. This paper demonstrates that liturgical transformation was a two-way process, in which liturgy was the object as well as the agent of change. Three essential factors - the liturgy of the Eucharist, the space of the early Christian bas…

  • Communication in a visual mode

    Dale Kinney•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2018

Apse mosaics are a form of visual communication employed by popes throughout the Middle Ages, from the sixth through to the thirteenth centuries. This essay examines the nature of this visual mode and the means by which viewers could understand it. A theory of viewing widely attributed to Pope Gregory I (590–604) is shown to be especially pertinent to early medieval apse mosaics and to the twelfth-century mosaic in the apse of S. Maria in Trastev…

  • The Church Basilica

    Open Access•Dale Kinney•ARTICLE•Acta ad archaeologiam et artium…•2001

The debate over whether the early church basilica was “imperial” is bound up with many other questions, including the origins of the building type, and whether building types have fixed or only contingent associations. Krautheimer, for example, maintained that the imperial quality of the early Christian basilica was generally transmitted, as the church basilica was a descendant of the public basilica which it formally resembles, and which itself …

  • A Late Antique Ivory Plaque and Modern Response

    Dale Kinney•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•1994

A recently published challenge to the authenticity of the ivory plaque of the Symmachi, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, is refuted, and its late fourth-century origin is confirmed by comparison with other plaques whose fourth- or fifth-century date is secure. The charge of forgery is related to patterns in recent art historiography, and these are traced to an anachronistic critical vocabulary that entails inappropriate norms of illusionist…
