Formation and development of tourism disaster management networks
Building destination resilience and preparing tourism businesses for disasters requires collaboration with emergency management agencies. This study investigates network formation and development during emergencies in Piopiotahi/Milford Sound and Tāhuna/Queenstown, Aotearoa/New Zealand. Using survey and interview data from tourism and emergency management stakeholders, it employs mixed methods Social Network Analysis to explore collaboration driv…
Evolving Landscape of Partnerships of U.S. Destination Marketing Websites
Hyperlinks to external websites are a reflection of partnerships of destination marketing organizations (DMOs). This longitudinal study investigates the external hyperlinks placed on the home page of U.S. state tourism websites from 1999 to 2018. Our analysis shows that the landscape of DMO partnerships underwent considerable growth; however, the growth was distributed unevenly among categories of partners, particularly as social media became inc…
Tourism Disaster Management
Collaboration between tourism and emergency management organizations is critical for the safety of tourists and the communities they visit. Using a mixed methods social network approach, this study explores the practices and structural characteristics of tourism disaster management collaboration in Piopiotahi/Milford Sound and Tāhuna/Queenstown, in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Our analysis reveals five types of collaborative relationships: acquaintance,…
Stakeholder assemblages of destination climate adaptation
This paper examines local perceptions of climate adaptation. We develop climate scenarios using the Tourism Climate Index (TCI) to determine the type of tourism that future climate resources will support. Using the case study of Croatia, our findings suggest the possibility of season extension, but also problematic snow cover for winter sports resorts. We design our study using assemblage theory, enabling us to examine local perceptions to climat…
Developing a weighted model to measure knowledge diffusion in a tourism destination network
Efficient knowledge transfer enhances tourism destination competitiveness. Multiple factors, however, affect knowledge transfer, making it a complex process to quantify. To address this complexity, we developed a quantitative tool by integrating a diffusion model with the major antecedents of knowledge transfer identified in the knowledge management literature. We applied this model in the Western Australian tourism industry and demonstrated its …
Digital sustainability
The growing attention to digital sustainability can arguably be linked to climate change and digital transformations as major megatrends rapidly altering our collective present and future. The current Russian-Ukrainian war and the recent pandemic, however, have both raised uncertainty over the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement and the role of technology and innovation for sustainability. Without ignoring the dramatic consequen…
Increasing the efficiency of knowledge transfer in an Italian tourism system
Efficient transferring information and knowledge play a fundamental strategic role in a tourism system. This is especially important in critical times where efficient collaboration practices and a fluid flow of ideas is essential for the performance and the growth of the entire tourism industry. Here we use the methods of network science for increasing our awareness of the different collaborative structures and the potential information and knowl…
Organisational effectiveness for ethical tourism action
This paper explores how small tourism firms driven by an ethical approach to tourism narrate their organisational effectiveness. The study frames the ethical approach articulated in the first-person accounts of these firms’ owner-managers using Aristotle’s notion of phronesis, that is the process of identifying “good” actions consistent with living well and with an ethical telos. The research consists of a narrative approach via unstructured inte…
Tourism destination brokers
Italian tourism intermediaries
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the application of Social Network Analysis (SNA) to the Italian tourism system. The research question is: do relationships among tourist enterprises affect the organizational asset of the Italian travel system? The research takes as unit of analysis the Italian travel agencies and tour operators system and represents quite a significant disclosure for organizational theses because it offers a different view…
Computational modelling and simulations in tourism
The aim of this contribution is to briefly sketch and discuss the main issues that concern the activities of modelling and simulating complex phenomena and systems. The focus is on numerical and computational techniques. We discuss the validity of these methods and examine the different steps to be taken for ensuring a correct, accurate and reliable implementation. The approach is essentially of general methodological nature, regardless of specif…
A network perspective of knowledge transfer in tourism
Substitution threat between Airbnb and hotels
Quantitative Methods in Tourism
In this revised second edition, the authors offer a presentation of quantitative research methods for tourism researchers. This accessible and rigorous guide covers common issues in statistical analysis of data and the most widely-used techniques as well as several newer and less common approaches to data analysis
Quantitative Methods in Tourism
This book goes beyond the methods usually covered in introductory textbooks on quantitative methods in tourism. It considers key issues in data selection, approaches to factor and cluster analysis and regression before covering advanced topics including structural equation modelling, maximum likelihood estimation, simulation and agent-based modelling. The result is a guide to quantitative methods in tourism that de-mystifies both simple and appar…
Complexity traits and dynamics of tourism destinations
The value of agent-based modelling for assessing tourism–environment interactions in the Anthropocene
Mapping time series into networks as a tool to assess the complex dynamics of tourism systems
Tourism Management, Marketing, and Development
Open data initiatives from governments or local authorities are recent, but they have rapidly resulted in the development of services or mobiles applications, often dedicated to tourism. This paper defines the open data phenomenon and explores the different implications for the tourism industry, considered as a sectoral system of innovation and production. This approach allows to grasp the different dimensions of the impacts of open data - instit…

Network Analysis and Tourism
This book provides a comprehensive review of the contribution of network analysis to the understanding of tourism destinations and organizations. It discusses both the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of network analysis and then illustrates the relevance of this approach in a series of tourism applications

Symptoms of Complexity in a Tourism System
Tourism destinations behave as dynamic evolving complex systems, encompassing numerous factors and activities that are interdependent and whose relationships might be highly nonlinear. Traditional research in this field has looked after a linear approach: variables and relationships are monitored in order to forecast future outcomes with simplified models and to derive implications for management organizations. The limitations of this approach ha…
