Not an Industrial Matter: The British Trade Union Movement and Zionism, 1936–1967
This article examines the British trade union movement’s relationship with Zionism in the period from the Arab Revolt to the Six Day War. It argues that despite an appearance of fraternalism between the British and Zionist labour movements, this relationship was, in fact, governed more by indifference and political expediency on behalf of British trade unions and unionists than by any genuine ideological solidarity or conviction. It shows the Tra…

Memoirs, Journal, and Correspondence of Thomas Moore: Volume 3
Throughout his professional life, the poet Thomas Moore (1779–1852) was variously celebrated and vilified for both his verse and his politics. Born in Dublin, he remained an ardent Irish patriot until his death. This eight-volume collection of Moore's memoirs, diaries and letters, edited by his friend Lord John Russell (1792–1878) and first published between 1853 and 1856, provides rare insights into a man whose genius was applauded by the Mornin…

The Geopolitics of Terrorism: Russia's Conflict with Islamic Extremism
A British specialist on the Russo-Chechen wars and international terrorism examines Russia's role in the Global War on Terror and, in particular, its long-term campaign against both separatists and Islamic extremists in Chechnya and elsewhere in the North Caucasus. The author advances the argument that Russia's Eurasian (as opposed to European) mode of governance, equating self-determination with separatism and cultural/religious differences with…
Ramzan Kadyrov: The Indigenous Key to Success in Putin's Chechenization Strategy
On 15 February 2007 Vladimir Putin accepted the resignation of Alu Alkhanov as President of Chechnya and nominated the Chechen prime minister—Ramzan Kadyrov—to act as his successor. This appointment, duly rubber-stamped by Chechnya's parliament, brought to an end to more than four months of speculation since 5 October 2006, when Kadyrov attained the age of 30 and thus became eligible for the post of Chechnya's head of state. Kadyrov's elevation t…

Obstacles to peace in Chechnya: What scope for international involvement
Recognising the failure of both internal and external parties to achieve a peaceful resolution of the Russo – Chechen war, this article seeks to establish what scope remains for international involvement to end the violence in Chechnya. By applying theories from the disciplines of conflict resolution and counterinsurgency to the confrontation, distinctions are drawn between opportunities of peacekeeping, peacemaking and peacebuilding, as well as …
Bio‐power and biohazards: A projective system reading of gay men's community‐based HIV prevention
This paper describes some of the more prohibitive aspects of HIV prevention among gay men in England. It argues that much current HIV prevention work assumes that prohibition is the most appropriate means of governing gay male sexual practice--most particularly in relation to the treatment of unprotected anal sex or bare-backing. The prohibitive approach constructs an opposition between the good gay citizen who privileges health maximisation and …
Terrorists, bandits, spooks and thieves: Russian demonisation of the Chechens before and since 9/11
The Russo-Chechen conflict, arguably the bloodiest confrontation in Europe since World War II, only attracts the attention of the Western media when the Chechens stage terrorist ‘spectaculars’ such as the ‘Nord-Ost’ or Beslan school sieges. Putin's uncompromisingly tough line against the Chechens is popular among an ethnic Russian electorate traumatised since its own ‘Black September’ in 1999. Since 9/11 this conflict has been presented almost ex…
Stained Steel: Esops, Meta-Power, and the Ironies of Corporate Democracy
This case study examines the situated interactions between management and workers during a proposed sale of stock by a U.S. steel manufacturer. Our focus permits a fine-grained analysis of how varieties of meta-power both condition and are contested in situated interactions. In our setting, the workers owned the company through an employee stock ownership plan, thereby confounding the traditional hierarchical relation between management and worke…

Mujahedeen, Mafia, Madmen: Russian Perceptions of Chechens During the Wars in Chechnya, 1994-96 and 1999-2001
The Russo-Chechen wars of 1994-96 and 1999 to date provided the Russian Federation with its first experiences of armed domestic insurgency and a fresh opportunity to apply theories of conflict resolution and international terrorism to the Russian situation. While broadly accepting the aims of its strategic partner, the West clearly was embarrassed by the crude propaganda issued by the Russian authorities in seeking to create negative stereotypes …

Social, Cultural, and Psychological Impacts of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill
The sociocultural and psychological impacts of the Exxon Valdez oil spill were examined in a population-based study of 594 men and women living in 13 Alaskan communities approximately one year after the spill occurred. A progressive dose-response relationship was found between exposure to the oil spill and the subsequent cleanup efforts and the following variables: reported declines in traditional social relations with family members, friends, ne…

Access to Experimental Therapies and Aids
For a variety of reasons, the AIDS epidemic is forcing a thorough reassessment of many of the standards by which the terminally ill and other medical patients are treated by health-care systems throughout the world. This has generally been a good thing. It has provided needed motivation for public policy-makers to take seriously a range of health-care issues that have often been downplayed, ignored, or debated with vigour only within the relative…

A group of metal tobacco boxes in the collections of the British Museum
This paper deals with a group of metal tobacco boxes which are probably all of Dutch or German origin. The tobacco box industries of both countries and their backgrounds are considered, as are box design themes, boxes known from archaeological and pictorial contexts, and existing dated or signed examples in the group and in comparable collections. German craftsmen and their workshop techniques are also discussed. The concluding section contains a…
