  • Canada’s landfill methane inventories

Open Access•Jordan Stuart, Evelise Bourlon et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2026

We present a measurement-based assessment of methane emissions from 42 landfills across diverse climatic regions in Canada. Our findings reveal that emission rates predicted by the First-Order Decay (FOD) model used by Environment and Climate Change Canada at the visited sites are substantially higher than most measured emission rates, on average by a factor of 3, particularly for cold and arid climates typical of the Canadian prairie provinces (…

  • Silence and related symptoms in children and adolescents

Open Access•Felix Vogel, Julian Reichert et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2022

Silence appears to have been confirmed by analysis as a core symptom of SM. Additional anxiety-related symptoms, such as avoidance behavior or motor inhibition associated with freezing, seem to co-occur with silence. The two communities of SM potentially indicate different mechanisms of silence. The symptoms of SM appear to be distinguishable from those of SAD, although there seems to be overlap in terms of difficulty speaking in situations outsi…

  • Tracking local radiocarbon releases from nuclear power plants in southern Ontario (Canada) using annually-dated tree-ring records

Open Access•Felix Vogel, Carley Crann et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropocene•2022•References: 37

Understanding the radiocarbon (14C) content of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) underlies many fields of research. This study shows how one can track the influence of nuclear power plants at the local and regional scale in Canada's largest urban area. This area is subject to significant 14CO2 depletion due to CO2 emissions from fossil fuel burning. Tree cores collected across southern Ontario in 2018 show that tree-rings dated annually record the…

  • Cognitive Variables in Social Anxiety Disorder in Children and Adolescents

Open Access•Felix Vogel, Julian Reichert et al.•ARTICLE•Child Psychiatry & Human…•2021

Clark and Wells' prominent model of social anxiety disorder (SAD) assumes that cognitive variables such as negative expectations or dysfunctional cognitions play a central role in the symptomatology of SAD. In contrast to adults, it is less clear how well the cognitive model can be applied to children and adolescents. A network analysis with seven nodes was conducted to explore the importance of cognitive variables and their interaction with symp…

  • Implications for Deriving Regional Fossil Fuel CO2 Estimates from Atmospheric Observations in a Hot Spot of Nuclear Power Plant 14CO2 Emissions

    Felix Vogel•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013

Using Δ14C observations to infer the local concentration excess of CO2 due to the burning of fossil fuels (ΔFFCO2) is a promising technique to monitor anthropogenic CO2 emissions. A recent study showed that 14CO2 emissions from the nuclear industry can significantly alter the local atmospheric 14CO2 concentration and thus mask the Δ14C depletion due to ΔFFCO2. In this study, we investigate the relevance of this effect for the vicinity of Toronto,…
