Anthropogenic activities in the páramo trigger ecological shifts in Tropical Andean lakes
A robust understanding of the impact of anthropogenic activities on high-altitude tropical aquatic ecosystems is key for the conservation and protection of the Tropical Andean biodiversity hot spot. We present the results of a multiproxy study of lake sediments from the high Andean páramo of El Cajas National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve in Ecuador. The main site, Laguna Pallcacocha, is well known for recording El Niño–driven clastic flood la…
Unlocking the wealth of Dutch pollen data for future research and education
Nearly 100 years ago, scientists started analysing fossil pollen and spores in the Netherlands. Since then, an enormous number of fossil pollen datasets have been generated by several researchers at different research institutes. Until recently, most pollen data from the Netherlands was not publicly available. With this communication we like to advertise that this situation has changed and present progress on the Dutch pollen database project. Th…
Modern pollen-vegetation relationships along a steep temperature gradient in the Tropical Andes of Ecuador
The characterization of modern pollen rain assemblages along environmental gradients is an essential prerequisite for reliable interpretations of fossil pollen records. In this study, we identify pollen-vegetation relationships using modern pollen rain assemblages in moss polsters (n = 13) and lake sediment surface samples (n = 11) along a steep temperature gradient of 7°C (3100–4200 m above sea level) on the western Andean Cordillera, Ecuador. T…
Columbus’ environmental impact in the New World
Columbus' arrival in the New World in AD 1492 on the northern coast of Hispaniola was followed by a suite of changes in land-use. We reconstruct environmental change from a 225-cm-long sediment core from site Los Indios from an abandoned and sediment-filled meander of the Yaque River, Cibao Valley, northeastern Dominican Republic. The sediment record starts ca. AD 195 (ca. 1755 cal. yr BP) and the history of the meander infill was monitored by ch…

Sensitivity of wetland hydrology to external climate forcing in central Florida
Available proxy records from the Florida peninsula give a varying view on hydrological changes during the late Holocene. Here we evaluate the consistency and sensitivity of local wetland records in relation to hydrological changes over the past ~ 5 ka based on pollen and diatom proxies from peat cores in Highlands Hammock State Park, central Florida. Around 5 cal ka BP, a dynamic floodplain environment is present. Subsequently, a wetland forest e…
Quantification Strategies for Human-Induced and Natural Hydrological Changes in Wetland Vegetation, Southern Florida, USA
An accurately dated peat profile from a mixed cypress swamp in the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park (FSPSP, Florida, USA) has been examined for pollen and spores. The near-annual resolved pollen record shows a gradual shift from a wet to a relatively dry assemblage during the past 100 years. Timing of drainage activities in the region is accurately reflected by the onset and duration of vegetation change in the swamp. The reconstructed vege…
