  • A new reading of Piaget in childhood sociology

Open Access•Daniel Stoecklin, Marc J Ratcliff et al.•ARTICLE•Childhood•2026

Returning to Piaget’s original writings reveals that sociologists of childhood still largely ignore the social dimension in his theory of developmental stages. Superficial reading and distorted integration may have been an effect of the disciplinary competition that surrounded the emergence of the sociology of childhood. After reviewing the sociological misunderstandings and reproduced clichés about Piaget’s conception of development, we restore …

  • Children’s Participatory Capability in Organized Leisure: The Mediation of Transactional Horizons

    Open Access•Daniel Stoecklin, Ayuko Berchtold-Sedooka et al.•ARTICLE•Societies•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This research conducted in Switzerland addresses the participatory capability of children regarding their organized leisure activities. Observations were made in 2016 in three French-speaking counties in Switzerland within 11 leisure facilities differentiated by their structural organization. Individual interviews were conducted with 34 children aged 13 to 16 as well as 11 managers of the leisure centers and three county-level child and youth pol…

  • The Transactional Horizons of Greta Thunberg

    Open Access•Daniel Stoecklin•ARTICLE•Societies•2021•References: 10

The paper aims at developing new understandings of agency, or capacity to make a difference, which is a central issue in childhood studies. Sixteen speeches delivered by climate activist Greta Thunberg between 2018 and 2019 are analyzed. The findings reveal 5 core reflexive operations (objectification, personification, sanctification, unification and diversification) underpinning the speeches. This is conducive to the hypothesis that Greta’s audi…

  • Freely Expressed Views: Methodological Challenges for the Right of the Child to be Heard

  • Institutionalisation of Children’s Rights: Transformability and Situated Agency

    Daniel Stoecklin•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2018•Cited by: 7•References: 2

In a previous article (Stoecklin, 2017), I considered the example of the “paradox of institutionalisation” (Stammers, 2013) occurring in the drafting of the General Comment on Children in Street Situations ( UNCRC , 2016). The vision of children’s “living rights” as the outcome of a structured process translating specific claims into an institutionalised set of norms (Hanson and Nieuwenhuys, 2013) has been identified. Analysis of the labels used …

  • Children's multidimensional agency: Insights into the structuration of choice

    Open Access•Daniel Stoecklin, Tobia Fattore•ARTICLE•Childhood•2018•Cited by: 18•References: 18

The structuration of agency that lies behind children's accounts of their well-being in Australia is highlighted. The three forms of agency that are evidenced from the data - agency as competence, agency as self-determination and agency as practical action in everyday contexts - provide insights regarding the characteristics of social structure. The multidimensionality of agency appears in practical achievements, individual choices and everyday a…

  • The General Comment on Children in Street Situations: Insights into the Institutionalisation of Children’s Rights

    Daniel Stoecklin•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 10

The drafting of the General Comment ( gc ) on Children in Street Situations ( uncrc, 2016), whereby the sociological perspective (Lucchini, 1993, 1996, 2007; Stoecklin, 2000a, 2007) that informed this labelling becomes lost in translation, provides a convincing example of the ‘paradox of institutionalisation’ (Stammers, 2013). The vision of children’s “living rights” as the outcome of a structured process translating specific claims into an insti…

  • Theories of action in the field of child participation: In search of explicit frameworks

    Open Access•Daniel Stoecklin•ARTICLE•Childhood•2013•Cited by: 9•References: 12

The article explores child participation from the perspective of the sociology of action. Despite the important literature on child participation following adoption of the UNCRC, a consistent theory of child participation is still missing. The distinction between the child as a subject of rights and the child as a social actor draws attention to the cumulative and systemic nature of action. Applications of a new model going in this direction are …
