  • Disablised or Ablised: Linguistic Categorisations of Dis/ability in Swedish Print Media Over Time

Open Access•Daniel Wojahn, Stina Ericsson et al.•ARTICLE•Disability Studies Quarterly•2024

Which linguistic labels we use to name ourselves and others – such as disabled and non-disabled – make a difference regarding how we see ourselves and each other. Such labels may also say something about how we view society and the roles of people in it, as illustrated by the choice between people-first and identity-first labels. In the present study, we use a sample of 56,666 articles published by Swedish print media to investigate how the conce…

  • Gendered sustainability: Are public spaces designed for girls good for everyone

Open Access•Ida Sandström, Stina Ericsson et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 11

This article examines female participation as a strategy for sustainable development. The increasing interest in female participation as a sustainability strategy on an international scale, underscores the need for critical examinations of this approach. Centring on contemporary Sweden as a prominent site of this development, this article investigates the municipal use of gendered design processes and gender-sensitive policies. Drawing on the stu…

  • Equality, marginalisation, and hegemonic negotiation: Embodied understandings of the built and designed environment

    Open Access•Stina Ericsson•ARTICLE•Multimodality & Society•2023

People’s experience of interacting with the built environment, such as entering a building, varies depending on how the environment is designed. For instance, a set of steps may be tackled without conscious thought by one person while they may prevent another person from entering altogether. Such processes mean that people are being categorised in different ways. The aim of this article is to add to our knowledge of how the built and designed env…

  • Visions of a City for All

Open Access•Lilian Müller, Stina Ericsson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Public Space•2022

Despite laws, policies, and visions to create cities and societies for all, barriers still exclude persons with disabilities from using buildings and public places. Our study aimed to identify choices made during the urban development process, which include or exclude users in the built environment; how and when these arise during the process; and what is needed to implement Universal Design (UD) as a strategy and tool to secure all users equal o…

  • Knowledge negotiation and interactional power: Epistemic stances in Arabic–Swedish antenatal care consultations

Open Access•Stina Ericsson, Dima Bitar et al.•ARTICLE•Multilingua•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 28

This article concerns knowledge negotiations as an aspect of interactional power in three-way interaction between Arabic-speaking women, Swedish-speaking midwives and interpreters in Swedish antenatal care. The notion of epistemic stance is used to investigate how all three participants negotiate knowledge, and how this affects the ongoing consultation. The data consist of audio recordings of 33 consultations, involving five midwives. Using an in…

  • Family displays in child–parent interaction

Stina Ericsson•ARTICLE•Research on Children and Social…•2021

This article engages with the sociological concept of ‘display’, that is, the process by which families show that they are family. The article argues for the need to include considerations of how displays are done at the local interactional level. In conversations between children, parents, and an interactive app, this study identifies two distinct patterns regarding how children develop their answers to the question Who are the people in your fa…

  • The language of cisnormativity

    Stina Ericsson•ARTICLE•Gender and Language•2018•Cited by: 5

Cisgender concerns the coherence of gender, over time, in perception, and through actions and identities. This article explores cisgender through the concept of cisnormativity - the normalisation of cisgendering - and its operation in spoken and multimodal interactions. Cisnormativity, like other normativities, is often conveyed implicitly and as such goes unnoticed in interaction. Through analysis of interaction at the micro level, this article …

  • Children's ongoing and relational negotiation of informed assent in child-researcher, child-child and child-parent interaction

    Open Access•Stina Ericsson, Sally Boyd•ARTICLE•Childhood•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 24

Contemporary considerations of childhood research ethics recognize children's competence and agency, their rights to be informed about research and their capabilities to negotiate participation. There is also a recognition of children's assent as ongoing and formed in the relationship with the researcher. Drawing on two different data sets, we investigate information and assent as they appear in child-researcher, child-child and child-parent inte…

  • That is the dad and this is the mum’

    Stina Ericsson•ARTICLE•Gender and Language•2012•Cited by: 1

Based on a corpus of everyday adult-child conversations in Swedish, the study uses interactional linguistics to explore how sexual identity is managed by adults and young children. The five children are studied longitudinally, from about one and a half to three and a half years of age. The management of sexual identity is shown overwhelmingly to concern the management of heterosexuality, the conversations showing a strongly heteronormative view. …

  • Heteronormativity in First Encounters: An Interactional Analysis

    Stina Ericsson•ARTICLE•NORA - Nordic Journal of Feminist…•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 7

Conversations between people who meet for the first time follow specific constraints. For instance, speakers are constrained as to what topics they can talk about, and how. Analysing recordings of non-institutional informal conversations in Norwegian between previously unacquainted speakers, this paper argues that conversationally appropriate displays of heterosexuality are a way of fulfilling constraints on friendly encounters in such settings. …
