What does it mean to be whole? Exploring the lived experience of wholeness
Sacred moments as a source of life altering change
This paper examines recent work on an epiphanic construct that has begun to receive attention in the psychological literature—sacred moments. Sacred moments are brief periods of time in which people experience a sense of transcendence, boundlessness, ultimacy, deep interconnectedness, and spiritual emotions. The paper begins by considering the concept of sacred moments, noting how they overlap with and depart from related constructs, such as self…
Online Single-Session Intervention to Foster Connection in Older Adults
Purpose Social disconnection in later life significantly impacts emotional and psychological well-being, yet scalable, evidence-based interventions remain limited. This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the preliminary efficacy of a single-session online Awareness, Courage, and Love (ACL) intervention in enhancing interpersonal closeness and well-being among older adults. Method Sixty-four community-dwelling older adults (aged ≥60) were…
Spiritual and religious competency training for mental health care professionals
Spirituality and religion (R/S) are important aspects of diversity and functioning for most people, and training in these areas for mental health professionals is needed. But how much training is enough? This paper proposes R/S training guidelines that can be used to inform coursework, practicum/internship didactic training, and supervision
The Holiness of Wholeness
This chapter proposes that the essential contribution of religion to flourishing goes beyond any single factor. Instead, religion is concerned with human wholeness—that is, how people put the bits and pieces of their lives together into a coherent whole. What lends unity to the lives of many individuals is the focus on sacred matters. Religious institutions are most uniquely concerned with what people hold sacred and how they can develop and fost…

Religious and spiritual struggles and their links to psychological adjustment
A qualitative analysis of sacred moments in religiously integrated group therapy
The aim of this study was to qualitatively explore sacred moments in religiously integrated group therapy for Danish Pentecostals who were experiencing a personal crisis (n = 18). This was a follow-up study based on data from 2009 and 2018. An interpretative phenomenological analytical approach was used to generate and analyze the data material. Three themes emerged: 1) Relationship with God, 2) Relationship with therapist, and 3) Relationship wi…
Exploring the relationships among age, spiritual struggles, and health
The purpose of this study is to address two issues. First, an effort is made to see if there are age differences in the prevalence of spiritual struggles. Second, tests are performed to see if age differences exist in the relationship between spiritual struggles and physical health. Data from a recent nationwide survey reveal that younger adults report that they encounter more spiritual struggles than either middle-aged or older adults. The findi…

Non-smokers seeking help for smokers
The willingness of non-smokers to seek help for smokers holds promise for tobacco cessation and may help address ethnic and language disparities. Non-smoking women in smokers' households may be the first group to target
Social Factors Related to Risk for Violence and Sexually Transmitted Infections/HIV Among Asian Massage Parlor Workers in San Francisco
Acoustic characteristics of English fricatives
This study constitutes a large-scale comparative analysis of acoustic cues for classification of place of articulation in fricatives. To date, no single metric has been found to classify fricative place of articulation with a high degree of accuracy. This study presents spectral, amplitudinal, and temporal measurements that involve both static properties (spectral peak location, spectral moments, noise duration, normalized amplitude, and F2 onset…
