An Anti-Imperial Mythology: The Radical Vision of Howards End
Critics have read Howards End as if Forster ‘specifically barred’ the poor from the novel (Trilling), so that only the middle classes are considered and not in a ‘truly radical’ way (Crews). Yet Forster does, after all, concern himself with the very poor in his depiction of Leonard Bast, Jacky and other characters, and extensively in the thoughts of Margaret. Furthermore, he creates the myth he says England lacks, and, considered in relationship …
Simulation, Fetishism and World Domination: Using Baudrillard to Analyse American Discourse
According to Jean Baudrillard, in a totally functional world people become irrational and subjective, given to projecting their fantasies of power into the efficiency of the system, a state of ‘spectacular alienation’. I argue that Americans as a society have accommodated themselves to such a system to the detriment of their ability to make sense in their public discourse. Baudrillard finds pathology in the system of objects as it determines soci…

The Captivity Narrative and East-West Understanding in Aboulela’s The Kindness of Enemies
The American captivity narrative, like John Smith’s account of his rescue by Pocahontas, derives its plot from accounts of captivity in the conflicts with Morocco and the Ottoman Empire. This cross-cultural provenance is reflected in Leila Aboulela’s The Kindness of Enemies which can be usefully compared with the greatest of the American texts, The Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson (1682), in regard to characters, plot, setting an…
Reading the Veil of Imperial Discourse: Shakespeare and Arab- English Accounts of the Death of Diana
This paper applies literary reading techniques to journalism. The texts under study are British editorial essays reacting to Arab journalism about the death of Princess Diana, a British national tragedy, and also a moment of unique Arab/Western interface, since she died in a car crash with her Egyptian lover, Dodi Fayed. The texts are about Arabs: one a response to Arab publications on Diana’s death, the other a tendentious consideration of the p…
Iago’s Orientalism: Imperial Discourse in Othello
The debate about how Othello treats race, imperialism, and Arabs has gone on from Rymer in the Seventeenth Century until the present day. This essay surveys the critical heritage on this theme and then focuses its analysis on the language of the play, considered in terms of Edward Said’s theories in Orientalism and Culture and Imperialism, to determine whether Shakespeare himself held racist and Orientalist views. This analysis finds the source o…

Aesthetic Language Transformed: The “Poetry” of Søren Kierkegaard
In an aside in On Authority and Revelation Søren Kierkegaard makes it clear that he avoids writing in verse because it is artificial, is too heavy with rhythm and rhyme for his purposes. He says he wants “to produce a lyrical effect in prose better than it can be done in verse.” I present a collection of his prose set in free verse form in order to emphasize its rare power and beauty. From the study of this “lyrical prose” from various of Kierkeg…
