Why is Cuba’s economic reform progressing so slowly
Cuba has moved from a lengthy first stage (1990–2008), in which reforms were considered a necessary but reversible evil, to another in which reforms are seen as necessary and desirable. However, the lack of a comprehensive and timely approach to those processes has severely hampered the outcomes of reforms already underway. The purpose of preserving political control and the inherited institutional framework explains, in turn, why authorities hav…
Triangular Cooperation: Change or Continuity
International migratory agreements: The paradox of adverse interest
This article seeks to explain the contradiction between the promises of welfare gains derived from the economic models recommending the removal of immigration restrictions and the realities experienced by countries attempting to apply restrictions to immigration flows. A formal model is built in which the strategic reaction of countries considers not only the benefits derived from migration but also the (economic and non-economic) costs that migr…
Perceptions, identities and interests in South–South cooperation: The cases of Chile, Venezuela and Brazil
The relevance acquired in recent years by South–South cooperation seems to be connected with deeper structural transformations occurring in the international system. However, the variety of cooperation models promoted by new providers in the South requires the identification of complementary factors to help explain current patterns. A set of socio-cognitive elements, related to each country’s perceptions, identities and interests, can yield great…
Alternative Development Strategies for the Post-2015 Era
The global economic crisis of 2008-2009 exposed systemic failings at the core of economic policy making worldwide. The crisis came on top of several other crises, including skyrocketing and highly volatile world food and energy prices and climate change. This book argues that new policy approaches are needed to address such devastating global development challenges and to avoid the potentially catastrophic consequences to livelihoods worldwide th…
Colonisation, Institutions and Development: New Evidence
n This article analyses current attempts to identify the factors underlying long-term economic growth. The author criticises some of the arguments on which the two main explanations that dominate recent literature are based: institution vs. geographical factors. Using an eclectic approach, the author considers the role of geography, trade, human capital and institutional quality in explaining development. The results of the empirical model confir…

Inequality, institutions and progress: A debate between history and the present
This article analyses current attempts to interpret the factors underlying long-term economic growth, paying special attention to the Latin American case. It discusses both the interpretations whose advocates claim that geographic conditions have a decisive role in shaping the development process and those according to which colonization is seen as giving rise to an institutional framework ill-suited for development. The author -based on his own …

Globalisation, civil society, and the multilateral system
This paper analyses the significance and scope of globalisation, focusing on its implications for the autonomy of national actors, on the one hand, and on the new demands that global governance imposes upon multilateral action, on the other. It is argued that the current form of globalisation is in fact compatible with some degree of autonomous coordinated social action outside the realm of the market. This allows us both to differentiate between…

The Vatican Bureaucracy and Its Neo-Christian Project: Reflections from a Low-Income Parish in Mexico
We who participated in the Fourth Congress of Central American Sociology, which took place in Managua in July 1980, can testify to the happy and optimistic atmosphere of those days closely following the first anniversary of the triumph of the Sandinista Revolution. We all shared the feeling of happiness and of national independence. Dark clouds were not absent, of course, but the optimism in the wake of victory was intoxicating. In some respects,…
