In Living Memory
We model a stable population that has experienced an important historical event and the declining proportion, as time passes, of the population that remembers that event. The proportion is determined by the demographic characteristics of the population, including its age distribution, the natural rate of growth, the underlying birth rate, the life table probabilities to which the population is subject, and the effects of immigration and emigratio…
Age–Income Dynamics over the Life Course
This article is concerned with patterns of cohort aging and income progression. We explore the dynamics of age–income progression through the use of state transition matrices, consider alternative cohort definitions, and introduce an artificial cross-sectional cohort based on the transition matrices. Our applications make use of individual income records from Statistics Canada’s Longitudinal Administrative Database. Relative income is defined by …
Effects of Population Aging on Gross Domestic Product per Capita in the Canadian Provinces
A shift in population distribution toward older ages is underway in industrialised countries throughout the world and will continue well into the future. We make use of a framework that we developed in earlier work to isolate the pure effects of population aging on per capita GDP in the 10 Canadian provinces and derive the rates of productivity growth required to offset those effects. For comparison, we consider also some changes relating to the …
Immigration and the rate of population mixing
The integration or mixing of immigrants with non-immigrants is an important issue in many countries. There are various forms of mixing. We consider here cross-parenting, the bearing of children with one immigrant parent and one non-immigrant. Our objective is to model cross-parenting as a demographic process and investigate the rate at which such mixing could occur. We identify three populations within an overall total: non-immigrant, immigrant, …
Does the marriage market sex ratio affect parental sex selection? Evidence from the Chinese census
A simulation analysis of the longer-term effects of immigration on per capita in-come in an aging population
Immigration is a possible instrument for offsetting longer-run adverse effects of population aging on per capita income. Our “laboratory” is a fictitious country Alpha to which we assign demographic characteristics typical of a country experiencing population aging. Si-mulations indicate that a very high immigration rate with heavy concentration in younger working ages might be required to keep per capita income from declining. More rapid produc-…
On Removing “Age” and Especially “Old Age” as a Criterion in Social Programs
Age, measured as years since birth, is a widely used criterion to determine eligibility for pension, health care and other social benefits. However, keeping age markers fixed ignores large and continuing gains in longevity and health, and can create work incentives (or disincentives) that become increasingly problematic over time; beyond that, age is a poor criterion for access to health care services. Removing age markers and introducing a guara…
Exploring the population implications of male preference when the sex probabilities at birth can be altered
The paper explores the population effects of male preference stopping rules and of alternative combinations of fertility rates and male-biased birth sex ratios
Age of Pension Eligibility, Gains in Life Expectancy, and Social Policy
Canadians are living longer and retiring younger. When combined with the aging of the baby-boom generation, that means that the “inactive” portion of the population is increasing and there are concerns about possibly large increases in the burden of support on those who are younger. We model the impact of continued future gains in life expectancy on the size of the population that receives public pension benefits. We pay special attention to poss…
A Dynamic Extension of the Period Life Table
The standard period life table is based entirely on the death probabilities of the given period. Popular (not expert) usage of life expectancies from a period table typically ignores the fact that the expectancies make no allowance for future declines
What Is Retirement? A Review and Assessment of Alternative Concepts and Measures
Population Aging, Older Workers, and Canada's Labour Force
The Expert Panel on Older Workers made recommendations designed to increase the labour force participation of older workers. We explore the implications that higher rates of older-worker participation would have for the overall size and age composition of the labour force, for the productive capacity of the economy, and for the incomes of Canadians. Our purpose is to assess the potential impact that increased participation of older workers might …

Age, Trend, and Cohort Effects in a Macro Model of Canadian Expenditure Patterns
A quadratic almost ideal demand system allowing for age, cohort, and trend effects is developed at the macro level. The model is estimated by maximum likelihood, using a three-tier iterative/search method applied to pooled 1961–1992 time series for five regions of Canada and six categories of expenditure. Hypothesis tests indicate support for the model specification. Elasticities are compared with those reported in other studies, with special att…

A Multivariate Analysis of Mortality in Rural Africa
This study provides an analysis of the determinants of mortality in a part of Ethiopia an area called Legeambo. While this area is small it is similar in many important respects to other parts of rural Africa: the standard of living is low access to sources of water for drinking cooking and bathing is difficult and medical services are all but nonexistent. It is also similar to other areas in terms of its high rate of mortality. Data are from a h…

A Simulation Analysis of the Effects of Population Change on a Neoclassical Economy
This paper is concerned with the effects of variations in demographic factors on the time paths of major economic variables. A theoretical macromodel of an economic-demographic system is specified, with numerical parameters. This model is used in computer simulations to study the economic effects of exogenous changes in fertility and immigration rates. A cohort approach is emphasized in the specification of both demographic and economic relations…

Population Aging and Future Health Costs in Canada
The extent to which the increase in the numbers of older people in Canada can be expected to influence the overall costs of health care services is examined. The authors also examine how these costs might be reduced by the adoption of alternative delivery systems. Per capita health care age-cost profiles for each sex are developed and used to construct an economic-demographic model in which projected health care costs are compared with projected …
Some demographic consequences of changing cohort fertility patterns
In this paper are formulated some convenient summary measures of fertility patterns. These measures, which are based on the Gompertz function, are total lifetime fertility, median age of mothers at childbirth, and inter-quartile range of age of mothers at childbirth. Estimates of the parameters of Gompertz function, based on Canadian data, are used to derive, for each of the summary measures, values which reflect historical fertility experience, …

On the Prospect of a Labour Shortage
The paper is motivated by concern expressed recently about the possibility of a 'labour shortage' in Canada in the I980's, and the implications of this for immigration policy. Consideration is given to the meaning of the term 'labour shortage.' Prospective changes in the population and labour force are discussed and the effects of immigration on the labour force and the economy are given special attention. The implications of slower population gr…
Career Attainment in Canadian Bureaucracies
Five hypotheses concerning the influence of age, seniority, expertise (education), and informal factors on salary attainment of men in bureaucratic careers in the Canadian federal administration are tested. Age, seniority, and education are positively related to salary, but relationships are stronger for the Anglophone majority than for the Francophone minority; older Francophones are behind their Anglophone equivalents. The departure of able Fra…

The Future Population and Labour Force of Canada
The authors use 1976 Canadian census data to present 11 alternative population projections and 15 labor force projections to the year 2051. The methodology of the projections is also presented (ANNOTATION)
