Evaluating the Effectiveness of Social Transfer Policies on Poverty for Children with Previous Experience in Poverty
This paper assesses the effectiveness of social benefit programs on children who had prior experience with poverty across 27 European countries in the years following the Great Recession (2012–2015). Even though social benefit functions might contribute to alleviating child poverty, our findings highlight that child poverty differs not only across social benefit functions, but also between children with and without previous experience in poverty.…
Labor market regulation and gendered entrepreneurship: A cross-national perspective
Assessing Territorial Units’ Contribution to Convergence Beyond Aggregate Measures: The Role of Neighbourhood
This paper provides an analytical framework for the study of spatial income dynamics using the classical measures of $$\sigma$$ σ -convergence (reduction in dispersion) and $$\beta$$ β -convergence (poor areas grow more quickly than rich ones) linked by a re-ranking metric and reinterpreted based on the ‘leave no one behind’ principle. Our approach allows identifying the contribution of each territorial unit to each of the three facets of distrib…
Foreign direct investment openness and income classes in Europe around the Great Recession
Distributional implications of capital account regulation is eminently context-specific. This paper examines the distributional effects of the openness of foreign direct investment (FDI) flows across 27 European countries in different economic environments around the Great Recession, covering the period 2007–2013. Our multi-level approach allows us to combine country-level variables and sociodemographic characteristics of individuals. The results…
Assessing regional convergence of the size of middle classes in Euro-Mediterranean countries
Historically, Euro-Mediterranean European countries have presented high levels of intra- and interregional socio-economic inequalities and are regular recipients of financial support under European Union Cohesion Policy. This paper provides evidence of regional convergence in the size of lower- and upper-middle-income classes across regions of France, Greece, Italy and Spain for the period 2004–17. Our results also reveal that changes in class si…
Vulnerability and Covid-19 infection rates: A changing relationship during the first year of the pandemic
In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Spain was one of the worst-hit countries, although not all areas and social groups were affected equally. This study focuses on Malaga, a cosmopolitan tourist destination located on the southern Mediterranean coast that has the sixth largest population in Spain. Specifically, it examines the relationship between multidimensional vulnerability and COVID-19 infection rates across the city's census tracts …

Institutional convergence and a lingering two-speed Euro area: A response
This contribution responds to the Comment entitled ‘Institutional quality convergence in the Euro area countries: a note and further evidence’ on our earlier published article in the Journal of Contemporary European Studies, Volume 28, Issue 3. By using the same data on Government Effectiveness, Regulatory Quality, Rule of Law and Control of Corruption analysed in the Comment, we confirm the coexistence of certain processes of institutional conve…
Economic Gender gap in the Global South: How Public Institutions Matter
Institutional quality in the Euro area countries: Any evidence of convergence
Divergence in institutional quality across Euro area countries constitutes a risk for the smooth functioning of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), increasing the vulnerability of the Euro to negative economic shocks. In this paper, we examine potential institutional convergence across Euro area countries since the onset of the Great Recession (2008–2017). We focus on a range of institutional aspects closely connected with business performance…
Social Transfers and Child Poverty in European Countries: Pro-poor Targeting or Pro-child Targeting
Children are generally at a higher risk of poverty than the population as a whole, although the mechanisms that lead to their socio-economic vulnerability vary widely across European countries. This paper aims to further our understanding of to what extent cross-country variations in child poverty risk are associated with different ways of social transfer targeting: pro-poor versus pro-child targeting. In particular, we address the potential impa…
