Françoise Bartiaux, Antoine Habay•ARTICLE•Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift -…•2024

The Brussels metropolitan area is one of the most congested areas in Europe every working day, despite alternatives to mobility by means of a car converging on the capital. The article draws on social practice theories to examine the practice of commuting by car to the Brussels Region. The aim is to describe the origins of the commuting and understand the current situation. The constitution of the practice since the 19th century is outlined, with…

  • Gender roles and domestic power in energy-saving home improvements

    Open Access•Françoise Bartiaux•ARTICLE•Buildings and Cities•2022•References: 10

The importance of considering gender aspects in studies on residential energy consumption has been acknowledged. However, an important topic is still ignored in gender and energy transitions research: domestic power for men and women differs depending on the type of couple to which they belong. According to Pierre Bourdieu, the chances of each spouse to exercise legitimate power in domestic affairs depend on their respective economic and symbolic…

  • Energy Poverty as a Restriction of Multiple Capabilities

Françoise Bartiaux, Rosie Day et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Development•2021•Cited by: 19•References: 37

Energy poverty is a multidimensional issue and the capability approach is fruitful to show how energy-poor households are restricted in many aspects of well-being. With reference to Nussbaum’s Central Capabilities, and based on qualitative interviews, this contribution aims to illustrate how energy-poor people are limited in five capabilities in their daily life and how these restricted capabilities sometimes reinforce each other in vicious circl…

Open Access•Anne Baudaux, Françoise Bartiaux et al.•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2020

The data produced between 2014 and 2017 consist of field observations and in-depth interviews with people affected by energy poverty. Our study shows that the practices and negative emotions of these people must be understood in the context of the shortage of modest housing in the Brussels Region and the poor state of the housing stock. This …

    Open Access•Anne Baudaux, Françoise Bartiaux•ARTICLE•Brussels Studies•2020

  • Socio-Technical and Cultural Approaches to Energy Consumption

Ana Horta, Harold Wilhite et al.•ARTICLE•Nature and Culture•2014

Energy consumption inconspicuously bridges nature and culture. Modern societies and cultures depend on intensive energy use from the extraction of natural resources. In fact, the industrialization process required large amounts of energy, but main sources such as oil and coal, have been gradually depleted and found to be heavily polluting the environment. Despite their environmental impacts, these resources have provided cheap and abundant power …

  • Family Dynamics and Social Practice Theories

Françoise Bartiaux, Luis Reátegui Salmón•ARTICLE•Nature and Culture•2014

Based on empirical data on “green” practices according to household size, this article questions the role, if any, given to close personal relationships by social practice theories in sustaining or not daily life practices. Data are mainly drawn from an Internet survey conducted in Belgium in 2006 by WWF-Belgium on daily practices, related to food, energy consumption, mobility, and tourism. Results show that smaller households carry out more nume…

Françoise Bartiaux, Luis Reátegui Salmón•ARTICLE•International Review of Sociology•2012•References: 21

This paper studies how consumers' reported practices related to food, energy use in housing, daily mobility, and tourism are combined and structured. Social practice theories are the main theoretical framework of this research. Data are drawn from a sensitisation campaign run by the WWF-Belgium and the methods developed to attempt to translate the theoretical focus to practices. Results show that both the low number of ‘green’ practices reported …

    Open Access•Françoise Bartiaux•ARTICLE•Population•1994•Cited by: 2

The decline in the birth rate recorded in Italy between 1916 and 1919 began to affect marriage market as early as the midthirties. This imbalance was resolved through major changes in the relative ages of the spouses, which continue to be apparent in a couple analysis based on individual data drawn from the Census of 1981. The role of mortality and of widowhood - which lead to a selection as of couples surviving to 1981 - in assessed. Their impac…
